I can't really see what you are referring to? The necklace seems to be merely a point of light on a dark jumper.

Hmm. Maybe try adjusting your monitor's brightness or contrast? There is a little bring point there but underneath there is clearly the hammer shape, it's a light grey on a black background so I guess it is a little hard to see.

Mortensen is of Scandanavian ancestry. This means that he may be wearing a Mjollnir purely as a decoration as many Scandanavians do - or he may be Heathen.

I remember watching "Surf Nazis Must Die" a few years ago, and before I fell asleep I noticed that one of the characters, not one of the Surf Nazis, was wearing a hammer. I believe the actor was Robert Harden (character "Leroy" in the movie). I don't know if this was costume's idea or just what the actor happened to be wearing, although Troma doesn't seem to me to be a heathen company in the least someone working on the set may have been or Harden himself may be/have been. There was no plot element connected to him wearing any jewelery, much less anything religious, which is what inclines me to suspect that someone knew of Heathenry or was heathen. Especially given the time period of the late 1980s production.

Interesting. Could you elaborate more on the significance of the time period? I was born in the late 80s so I don't really remember much of it! :)

Got it.

http://www.horror.com.pl/filmy/recka.php?id=554 4th picture down.

I have a soft spot for Troma, since I used to visit the vet's under their hangout several times a week (I was involved in cat rescue) and they were good for considerable street theater. I think their head honcho is Jewish, but then many folks in NY are. They're all about shock (via schlock); putting a hammer on a senior black guy was probably done in full awareness of the incongruity :-)

But you could go to either their site or Lloyd Kaufman's Myspace and ask '-)

There are several pics of him on line where he's wearing hammers large and small. He says it's to honor his Danish father. Is he heathen IRL as well? Who knows.
Went to a funeral a while back, the deceased was of Swedish descent and several family members were wearing hammers or had them hanging off the rear view window. One of them asked me if I was Scandanavian as well (short and dark so I'm not). They were very surprised to learn that I wear my hammer 'cause I'm heathen. Apparently I'm the first heathen they'd met and they were full of questions. Although they're not heathen, they have great interest and are glad to see that at least some are still following the old gods even though they choose not to.
