Dear dumbass dogs...

Nov 06, 2010 12:23

You appear to have misunderstood.

I stayed home today to relax and catch-up on things I have fallen behind on, since I was on the road three of the past four weekends, and had company the weekend Istayed home.

I did NOT stay home to chase your dumb butts all over the countryside, through burrs and mesquite.

Twice.

Okay, I will bear a certain measure of ( Read more... )

It was a coachwhip / red racer. And the good news is that I spotted him (and the dogs didn't, and I was able to confine them) while he was still near the door. The bad news is that the doors open inwards. So, I annoyed him ... probably a lot ... with a push broom. First moved him away from the door, so I could open it. Then poked under the bookshelf he'd taken refuge under and manipulated him back to the door, where he departed, for relief from poking. He bit the broom several times ... and one can hardly fault him.

For those not in the know, yes, they are non-venomous.

Ask Jeff about trying to evict one from in-between staked comic boxes sometime...

Soon after we moved here, in Hereford, we had one of those in the garage. I could see it was non-venomous, although I didn't know what exact species. Took quite a bit to get it out of the garage, especially when it went the other way and headed behind a thousand pound tool cabinet. I finally grabbed it by the tail and hauled it out. When I held it out at arm's length, it was a good five feet long... boy, was it irate. Tossed it outside, it promptly headed right back for the garage. Finally got it to go in the other direction. It looked like this one: http://digital-desert.com/wildlife/snakes/320-red-coachwhip-1.jpg

Were you wearing gloves? Jeff has hand-evicted some wearing fireplace gloves in the past, but that's beyond my bravery threshold.

Nah. I just grabbed it by the tail. But I did a thorough study of the head to make sure there was no triangular shape going on! I used to have garter snakes when I was a kid, and I've handled big ones before. Never one that got this annoyed about it though. Ha!

And really tiny -- in case one can't tell via my poor photography skills, that's a nickel he's next to.
