Because ANY other outcome would have been extremely boring, so they went for the glaringly obvious. I have to admit, at some point I thought "maybe it's a double-twist, because sure as hell EVERYONE watching knows how this is going to play out..." Alas, no.
But to be honest, I somewhat liked the ep, and I also liked Irene (the actress is on Game of Thrones as well, btw, she's a great choice for both characters, IMO). However, she (Irene) was completely out of character in the last bit, because how could SHE NOT SEE THAT COMING?!
I don't see this Holmes series as something that should surprise me, but only an old story in a new dress. I know what's coming, but I can enjoy the spin on it nevertheless.
