High speed data transfer. It's used in some external hard drives (although USB2 pretty much caught up with it, and USB3 beats it) and most midrange to high-end digital video cameras.
It was originally like USB but much faster, but then USB came out with a faster version which was almost as fast, and more widely available. It's on high-end video gear because high-end video gear users are Mac snobs.
It's technically superior to USB in a number of ways, but more expensive, and therefore not as well supported.
