So… it’s actually been a really long while since I talked a bit about Haine and his whole deal about his fear and aversion to women, what happened in the past to affect it, and the different ways he does deal with women if he has to. WARNING: this is going to contain a lot of spoiler images, so don’t yell at me otherwise.
I do believe that his fear of touch comes from two different kinds of emotions and ‘touching’ he’s received as a kid. The first one is the kind that he’s probably most afraid of, which is the kind and gentle touch… something that he received from his ‘sister’. The second one is the “AHAHAHA BADTOUCH” that he was subjected to because of his role as an experimental… guinea pig, really.
In one of the first volumes of DOGS, we see Haine and Nill’s first encounter, where he basically finds her in a dark alleyway and saves her from guys who want to touch her… because he notices he has wings. They make a short exchange about them being genetically altered and then
THIS HAPPENS. Which is to say, Haine freaks out from her touch and has flashbacks about a certain girl. It’s a girl from his past, specifically, someone he has had quite a connection with. Earlier chapters hint at her being his sister, Lilly. And that he was the one that caused her death. Which affects him in much more ways than it should due to his sordid past… which I am going to talk about now.
In more recent chapters (24 and 25, to be exact), Haine had a chance to explain about how much he can recall about his past, how he’s the way he is and most importantly, where he got his neck ring from. To summarize: he wakes up in some underground lab, with no memory whatsoever of anything in his life before then (induced amnesia?) and the first person he meets in the same facility is… Lilly. They sort of bond or ten minutes, and then a giant monster comes in and throws her against the wall. I shit you not. The physician comes in and basically tells them all to ‘wake up’ and start fighting and badtouches Haine
in reallybad ways. And this is what Haine is subjected to for… oh. I don’t know. I’d say something close to about 7 or eight years of his life. Did you guys notice how the professor has 6 fingers on her hands? Creepy. Anyway, badtouch central. Already from the start you could see how this can completely warp how one can handle emotion and what ‘love’ is like for a kid who’s just faced with trauma like that. And I’m sure Haine dealt the only way he knew how… either going batshit crazy, or growing completely jaded and a bit sociopath-like about his future. After all, the plan was to raise super-soldiers.
But I digress. The final nail on the coffin really and truly was the death of Lilly. And by his own hands, too. Now, the manga showed certain scenes but didn’t explicitly state what happened, but I’m going to jump to conclusions and assume that some sort of mock exercise/battle occurred. A test, perhaps, where Haine was pitted with Lilly. A final test? But anyway, the two fought, and Haine most likely blacked out as the ‘dog’ in him awakened and… killed Lilly. Such as seen in
these panels. The final page after this is Haine ending her pain and cracking her skull for her.
Do not click if you are squeamish. I’m pretty sure that shortly after this incident, Haine goes batshit crazy and kills everyone in the compound… or so he thinks. But that’s a different essay altogether.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
I’m still a little confused honestly as to how Nill is an exception to his ‘freaking out from a woman’s touch’ reaction, but I guess in some way, he does consider it a path to redemption. I don’t believe he sees her as a replacement Lilly, persay. But I’m just going to attribute it to the fact that yes, they are similar in that they have been genetically and surgically made over, as well as Haine having risked his life to save her. Also, she is cute and tiny and adorable.
We do see Haine interacting briefly with some other women in canon: Kiri, the old lady(Granny Liza), and Naoto. With each case, he handles them differently, depending on the relationship he has with them. Kiri, who probably teases Haine and Badou a lot but never goes over the line and asks them about the past…. Haine tends to be reserved, more quiet, and definitely avoidant of her touch. My ‘omg boobies’ icon is when she passes him coffee and he scoots back from the booth to get away from her. In camp, Himawari probably falls in this category the most. In that there is a certain… barrier between them and it’s left at that, really.
With the Granny Liza… in canon she’s the one who offers Haine and Badou jobs… it’s strictly professional, so he does tend to be maybe a bit more comfortable? However, he does rush conversations with her, delegating most negotiations to Badou. She also mentioned that Haine was a lot more volatile beforehand, and took a long while to trusting her. And even then, he usually tries to keep every exchange to a minimum. Business first, sort of thing. His actions are definitely that of ‘keep away, stay back’ and pushing them aside through means of harsh words. He only really softens up when Nill is mentioned. (FYI: NOT A LOLICON, ok?)
Finally, the default for most women in camp is how he treats Naoto. Hostile, volatile, abrasive. He goes out of his way to piss her off and get rid of her from his sight. He’s rude, snarky, doesn’t really consider her emotions cause, heck. Why should he? His plan is to keep them away and this is DOING THAT very thing. I expect further development between Haine and Naoto in the future, but for now… this is pretty much how they are. So, Roxy, Yoko... they are in this group, really. And any other girl who's been insulted by his yelling and yelled back.
As Badou said: “I heard that he had a real painful experience in the past. He just can’t get along with any women other than that girl Nill in the Church.” Pretty much sums it up how Haine is so antagonistic and avoidant of women. If he HAS to, he will interact with them. Only, in his own terms and his own ways. I’m pretty confident that it really all ties back to Lilly in the end, but seriously. Badtouch doctor did not help things AT ALL.
