So right, what I was saying: Miwa Shirow is lazy. The chapter releases feature nothing but black and white and blank panels. LUCKILY, this is actually remedied in the volume releases. PANELS ARE FILLED IN WITH IMAGES. THERE ARE TONES. NAOTO DOES NOT LOOK LIKE HAINE ( Read more... )

Thanks for the scans! I've got the tankoubans, but I've never gone back to compare the scanlations to the books. Pretty cool.

Miwa Shirow is lazy.

Actually, this sort of thing isn't very unusual. If you follow Minekura Kazuya at all, you'll find lots of re-draws and fill-ins (especially in Saiyuki Reload). I've seen corrected and redrawn panels in Bleach. Those are the first two that spring to mind.

Sometimes mangaka run up against deadlines and cut corners, knowing they can finish it for the tankouban. Sometimes they'll find out-and-out errors and fix them. And sometimes they just decide that page X would look better if they reorganized it, or the story is clearer if the POV angle is changed. It's a creative process, and it isn't always linear and predictable.

That said, you have to figure that fixing up the art for the tankouban means less time to work on the ongoing chapters which means more stuff to fix for the tankouban down the road (and less time for the new chapters).

I think most people are aware of that, actually. It was just a joke.

'K. A surprising number of people aren't aware that the art changes (and that stories and characters evolve as they're written, for that matter). I've seen too many ooh-aaah "see what I discovered" discussions over the years to assume it's meant humorously. /shrug/

In all honesty, assuming someone is ignorant and then going on to write a long, slightly condescending response when it was never implied at all that they needed that "lesson" is something I find kind of rude.

Wow, thank you! That's really neat. <3 I always wondered about the lack of shading and toning (I guess it makes the scans a little easier to color, though? ^^). I really like the Naoto redraws. They make her seem...so much stronger than the original drawings make her appear.

I admit that I do like the lack of shading and toning as it makes for excellent icons!

But it's nice to see the finished product as it's meant to be.
