He’s lived on the sea his entire life and learned those harder lessons early.
That things live and die in the waves harder than they do on land. That the sea can provide you with banquets and stunning, breathtaking views one minute and suck you down to a salty husk within the barren darkness the next.
The howling of the wind tonight reminds him of a monster on the edge of his vision, stalking him out of reach. Out of sight.
A shame he can’t see it since he’s technically on watch.
It could be an actual monster. It is the Grandline after all. But he’s never been scared of monsters. He’s filleted sea kings larger than whales and taken down all kinds of seemingly invincible opponents.
This call on the wind pulls his comforting trail of smoke away from his cigarette and pulls at his hair. Beckoning and warning him all at once.
Come to the unknown and be swallowed by the abyss.
It’s the lonely emptiness he fears and maybe that’s why he never could even think of leaving the old man because even when shit happened he wasn’t alone and the wind was less intimidating with him in front of it.
A blanket falls on his shoulders.
“I’m not cold.” He complains despite the rather thoughtful gesture.
“Are you sure? Because I came up here specifically to warm you up.”
“Heh.” He pulls off the blanket, the jacket he’s wearing, and pops a button or two. “Maybe it’s a bit chilly after all.”
And Zoro smirks as he slides down against him, his own body heat already a lure to press into. So he does.

Usopp tests the bars and locks of the cage again for the fifth time. It’s not so much that he doubts Franky’s construction as much as he is nervous and is compelled to check again, just in case.
A waft of Sanji’s last cigarette before the full moon shows itself is thick and full bodied in his nose, the wolf inside him making it’s presence known so strongly he feels like he wants to scratch his skin off and bare his teeth in a growl at the cook across the room.
He checks the bars and locks again.
“Chopper found the book that’s said to have the cure, stop it already. It’s going to be okay.”
Usopp feels shame so hot and heady he starts taking off his shirt now to hide himself in the folds in the fabric.
“Don’t. It’s my fault. You shouldn’t even be here.”
The night air hit his skin and he began to yank at his pants to avoid the eye contact the blond was seeking from him. Finally after a sigh Sanji spoke.
“You didn’t know what you were bitten by or what it’d do to you.”
“I should have told you to get out! To run!” Usopp snapped, still angry with himself.
“Haha, idiot. When the man who was in my arms minutes before starts screaming in agony there’s no way I’m going to leave. Besides, If we hadn’t been together you could have be killed by an unknowing Zoro, tossed over board by Franky, flung by Luffy, or worse, come across someone else.”
Because anyone else would have been ripped apart by the hungry werewolf stalking the deck as they slept. The thought had given him nightmares all month.
Sanji had subdued him and alerted everyone to what was happening but had been bitten and now shared his fate in the other custom cage across the room. Separated in case they tried to rip each other apart when the change happened.
Suddenly the cook flicked away the spent butt and quickly removed his clothes. Standing naked in the moonlight he was gorgeous for a moment, until the bones began to break and rearrange and he began to scream in the pain Usopp remembered too well.
Tears streamed down his face, knowing he did this to Sanji but forcing himself to watch as his punishment. Maybe that’s why the cook changed first.
Just as he was starting to hear and see more wolf than man he was changing too and heard his howl of pain grow into the howl of the wolf. He howled in regret and hope for a cure, a chance for his nakama, and his own redemption.
And strangely enough he forgets all about the wind.
