Would any of you really persecute someone for something that was out of their hands...? If they had no control over something?

Isn't what matters that they regret what they've done? Tell me what is more human than regret.

No. Not in that sense... if something was lurking in someone, and they hurt others. And never meant to. Not in a standard criminal sense, more of a spiritual sense.
