Sian & Rachel's great adventure - pt one!

Feb 06, 2006 22:43

Rachel and Sian sat in the Canberra airport. Rachel had, had Jacqueline stuck in her head for weeks before they set off on their great adventure. Sian just enjoyed singing badly in public places..

It's always better on holiday, so much better on holiday, that's why we only work when we need the moneeey!

Fast forward a few hours and you will find our heroes lost and running about in the Melbourne rain - oh noes! Eventually with the help of a taxi they make it safely back to their hotel, drenched.

They then spend many hours sitting, listening to the records of bands they plan to see over the next few days, chatting excitedly about this, and being discenchanted by cheap, trashy teen girl magazines. Sian was most excited to find an interview with Ricky Wilson in on of them (although he did insult Peanut in it), whilst Rachel was thrilled with the fashion under $100 section (- note the cover aluded you could get a whole outfit for this price, only each piece was generally more than this - WTF!?). They were also educated regarding the history of EMO, and such sub-cultures as screamo. lol!

Ok. Must. Change. Tenses! View points!
We had a quick bite to eat, the fallen came on the radio and we got even more excited. This time tomorrow we would be seeing FRANZ FERDINAND!!!!

We then headed up to Festival Hall to see The White Stripes, and eventful journey in which we met a man whore and I was gropped in broad daylight trying to hail a taxi o.O

Rachel says: My mother questioned wether or not he was a man whore, she thought he may be a pimp trying to recruit some more woman whores. But he should have classed it up a bit, a 7 11 is not the ideal place to attract new clientelle. As a pimp/man whore, I give him a 3 out of 10, it's only that high as his tie was shiny like.

Many people were lined up all pretty in their red, white, and black. I knew I forgot something! Doors opened and we took our favourite sot in the mosh (third row, middle). I was next to a man who drove many hours to be there, he was most excited. Rachel was next to a tall, sweaty man who in trying to cool himself down appeared to be wanking for the entire show. He was a bit of a wank. I really didn't enjoy the crowd (OMG ELEPHANT GIRL!). I was too tired and fragile, I sweated more than I had ever sweated before, and would have died if it wasn't for a lovely security man who gave me copious amounts of water <3.

The opening band was good, one of them is in Jack's other band - he looks like a bad Jarvis Cocker. The White Stripes were fantastic, though I don't know them brilliantly. I had a lot of fun dancing and singing what I knew. They kept teasing that they were going to play I smell (alright) a rat (I definately did not, smell alright ;) ). I was sad they didn't. But it was great. The set was beautiful. Jack and Meg Rock.

Rachel says: The White Stripes were wonderful, pretty set, well dressed roadies, fun sing a longs, Jack was generous with his water (BDO). Marimbas are the next instrument I want to learn after the mandolin. I'm inspired.

I don't remember how we got back to our hotel. But we did. And we washed our stinky clothes in the shower.
Then slept and woke up and got ready for a big day out..

We showered, dressed, applied sunscreen, and went out in search of cake - adequate nutrition for a big day of music, fun, and sunshine - Alex Kapranos agrees (he is after all my favourite emaciated boy, girl being Rachel). But all we could find was Macdonalds cafe, nothing is open on Sunday, crazy!

Rachel says: We should have eaten more cake. And not wasted time on McCrappe.

Once we found Elizabeth street we quickly gave up on trying to get a tram, they were packed. We tried to convince people to catch a taxi with us, they said "No, it's tooo expensive" - it was $6. The taxi driver was upset that we wanted to go to Princes park - "NOOOO - its too busy!", but he came around.

Then we joined probably the longest line I've ever been in. The bag check was funny, I could have brought in a knife/bomb/etc easily as long as my water was sealed.

We decided to go on the ferris wheel in order to get an idea of our surroundings. Only we needed to convince two people to go on for free so we would be balanced. Harder than you would think. Eventually we found two cute punk/indy girls who agreed. It was a very fast moving ferris wheel, but it was great. I decided if I couldn't be up the front for Franz I would like to watch them from that point of view.

Then we sat in the grass and watched Faker, applied sunscreen, and consulted with our timetable. We headed over to see the subways whom put on a great show. I especially enjoyed the end, as they were the only songs I knew so I could sing! But they are a very high energy band <333 I loved when the crowd surfer got on the blow up mobile phone. Ricky Wilson would have been chuffed.

Sat in the grass during Sarah Blasko's set and formulated a lengthy plan to get up the front for Franz. I was shocked that Rachel agreed (it involved 8 hours without toileting), she rocks.

And then I saw Anna! go_anna40 and then she dissappeared and I was sad. But then Cut copy made me joyous. Once again I only knew two of the bands songs, but I danced and had fun. And looked forward to seeing them again with Franz.

We had a quick toilet adventure - they were cleaner than the Macca's ones! :) And grabbed some fruit salad/soup for lunch (and I also purchased a banana). I was a bit slow with the sunscreen so we missed the start of Wolf Mother. Rachel convinced me that it was not the orange stage but the blue stage I wanted - but Franz = orange! And we slowly made our way through the crowd. Wolf Mother were brilliant too - although I couldn't see them at all - almost every one of the 40,000 were there. It took a rather long time to get into the mosh, but we did. And we had the joy of the Hilltop Hoods "droping shit on us" they kept saying one more! one more! here's some more shit for you! I joined the Kings of Leon Crowd shouting out NOOOO!

I really enjoyed the Kings of Leon too. Not having heard them at all (This girl has to listen to the radio, definately). They were great. I loved the spray hose. After that a few people left but security wouldn't let this fat guy out because he was fat. Rachel and I could have fit on the barrier where he was! Grrr! Nevermind. The third row was great seeing I didn't think we'd get into the mosh at all.

I enjoyed The Living End from afar as I got to sing Waltzing Matilda. And some other songs that I didn't know I knew. It was also entertaining watching their roadies setting up. One had a green Paul Frank t shirt which I thought said "Paul Franz" I wanted it until I realised this. And then there was five minutes til Franz I squeed.

And then they were there, in front of me, it was surreal. Beautiful. I had soo much fun. And then I saw my lover (the security gaurd from the night before) and screamed out lover and pointed excitedly, I imagine Franz were confussed. We were right in front of Nick. He was very beautiful. And so was Alex, Paul, BOB, and both Andys.

They did a great set. I danced and sang all the way through. I was only dissapointed in the lack of Darts.

The highlight for me was Matinee. It's my favourite song of theirs, many people say it's boring, but it's not, it goes off live. SO MUCH FUN!!! I danced and sung with a random boy! After I asked him to stop hurting my friend and he apologised and offered for us to go in front, to which I graciously declined. I love Franz Fans, they are generally lovely - like the band. Rachel thought I would propose to him. I must admit I considered it. Instead I told him to have a great life, he wished me the same back.

The three drummers were sexcellent. There are many other things I should mention but forget. Everyone else had great coverage in their LJs! I especially like Anna's. I'm so lazy, but it was a big week and my memory is hazy. I just remember intense happiness and dancing. Paul's sexah white chest.. Also it began with Jacqueline and ended with This Fire. Also when they went away I waved and Bob waved back. I love Bob.

Then I spent an hour being afraid of Iggy Pop, and then the White Stripes came on. And the security forgot to water us for a long time. And people began shouting out for water. Jack White jumped off the stage with his bottle and splashed us all, and then my lover saved me once more. I never got to thank him, but he is on my to marry list, which is in itself a great honour.

I love their lack of set lists it means you get a good mix from day to day.. They played I smell a rat and Jolene and a lot of other songs. I was very happy. They played The Nurse, which has brilliant Merimbas.

We attempted to finish the perfect day with pancakes, unfortunately the Melbournian version of the pancake parlour goes to bed early - even though it says late (11pm is not that late). And is more expensive. But has hot English waiters.

-I'm spent for today so I shall finish with a quote from Rachel, and you can all be in suspense for SIAN+BOB=LOVE!

Rachel says: The BDO was amazing. Well worth the rude taxi driver, lack of pancakes, and very long line. My fruit salad/soup could have been better. The toilets were clean! The ferris wheel was fast! I fell in love with many bands abd will try not to spend all my money on cd's.

sian and rachel's adventure, white stripes, fun in the sun, franz, i love bob, bdo
