But the real question is:

Does it fly? And does it turn into a statue?

apparently--they can turn into ANYTHING THEY WANT TO. There was one that turned into a teapot to trick a monk, but then as punishment for tricking a monk, it couldn't change back all the way. And another time they were building a railroad, and for a couple of days afterward, the people kept hearing the sound of a train, but no train was supposed to come! And then when it finally stopped, the townspeople found a bunch of dead tanukis along the railroad track, because they ran into a real train. whew.

Dude, rent Pom Poko! It will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about tanukis. And you can watch them use their testicles as parachutes.

I was thinking we could have filled them with real life egg yolks!

Tanukis don't look very Japanese at all.

I had a friend who thought sea horses were mythical creatures until she was like 20. She probably felt much the same as you do, now, when she saw one for the first time. It's like finding out unicorns are real!
