Does anyone else have really strong scent memory? I always have... I have a lot of smells that remind me of specific events/places/times (vividly, too). For example, bug spray/citronella always reminds me of Georgia, as does that "woodsy" smell or the "after rain" smell. I cannot smell the colognes or body sprays that my exes used to wear because ( Read more... )

It makes perfect sense. My mother has always told me that the sense of smell is the strongest connection we have to the emotional centers in our brains. Scents can trigger memories like nothing else can. Which I know can be a good thing or a bad thing! I get a whiff of some guys colognes and it reminds me of old boyfriends and puts me in a bad mood. I smell cut grass and it reminds me of fun summer days as a kid. Kind of like your old perfume there are scents I used to love and wear all the time that I just can't anymore without bringing myself back to a memory and emotional place that I really don't want to be.

Yeah, scents trigger memories like crazy for me. And I feel exactly the same way about this perfume as you mentioned... it's putting me in this really weird head space. Bad memories/emotions associated with it that I didn't think about until I'd already put it on. Sigh.

There are scents that affect my mood, but I haven't come across any that evoke really strong memories for me. I don't know why, because I've read about scent memory and it seems like certain scents should affect me that way.

Maybe it just doesn't work the same for everyone? I've just always had very strong scent memories since I was a kid. Usually I enjoy them, but I'm not liking this one today.

Yeah, probably not. I think I'm also just not as in touch with my emotions/emotional memories as most people I know, lol - not in a bad way, like denial, just in a different way. It often seems like I just don't feel things as strongly as other people - or even as strongly as my muses do, in the situations I put them into.

I do have music memories, though not as albums, more like bands or certain songs. Bowling for Soup reminds me of my highschool friend and also of my freshman year, Gaslight Anthem and End of Fashion (combined, into a playlist) remind me of my friend Tiffiny who introduced me to them and also of how much we listened to that playlist when Caly visited me. XD

Everybody is different! :) I'm an incredibly emotional person (perhaps too much so) which might be part of why I have such strong emotion memories, I think.

I like music memories better, they're usually all happy memories! :D

I just added you as a friend and I just wanted to say hi and explain why. I was doing a search of people in CT because I'm looking to meet new people and stumbled upon your journal. I read this entry and YES I do the same thing about certain smells, it's kind of strange. When I looked at your profile I saw how much you like reading, as do I. You even listed a few of my favorite authors. I devour books, I can't go a day without reading something, especially before bed. It's a great escape for me. Anyways, I hope you will respond to my request, and I hope to get to know you. You seem like a person with similar interests as me, so hope to talk to you soon!

Not as much with scent but I have strong sound memories too. The "Family Guy" theme song makes me, without fail, taste watermelon and feel like I just came back from a swim. It's because several years ago during one summer I would often swim in the pool at our apartments late in the evening and then come home and eat watermelon since I would be thirsty from swimming and watch Family guy as I did (oh god this sentence is too long).
