maybe i shouldnt judge him based on one experience, and this story sounds totally made up, but one time I was working in this private party of terminally ill kids, and he came up to like high five the kids or some shit (they probably made him) and then he kept rolling his eyes every time one of them asked him for an autograph and was just being a douchebag in general, and later my boss told me that she overheard him talking about how he doesnt like to give autographs because it makes them less valuable.
plus, he always had this air of superiority about him. like all the other players would joke around with us and were friendly, but he would never look any of us "workin' class" in the eye. eh. whatever.
I was thinking, until I read the rest of your response, that maybe he didn't sign autographs because he'd have rather shaken people's hands or had conversations, like, say, Bill Russell or Robert Crumb. And I think that's respectable. But market value is a stupid reason to not sign autographs. Well, maybe it's not so bad. But it would irritate me too to see someone use that reason. Probably.
If I were famous, I wouldn't sign autographs. I think they're kind of lame.
