And no, you didn't miss it: that's only my headcanon about why Bookman chose to be with the Black Order instead of remaining truly neutral. I don't quite remember where it's said, but if I remember correctly, when the Noahs learn that Lavi is a Bookman apprentice, they allude to something happening, so I just assume that it means that.

Ahh... yes ... it's mine too, I think it is during the torture that it comes out ( or the Noahs allude to) that 1) Bookman was once recording history from their side? I dunno 2) His previous apprentice had died (killed by the Noah?)
So Bookman can lecture Lavi as much as he wants about not caring, but to go to the Black Order... yeah picking a side Bookman,
