Yay, books! Ones I have also read: I enjoy Brandon Sanderson, but I am so far behind - I have two of his doorstops and Firefight in my to-read pile. I enjoyed The Gospel of Loki, loved Among Others and The Room. I got Stiletto for Christmas :) I find Robin McKinley a bit...unfinished? Have you read Sunshine? I loved the ideas in that but then it didn't seem to go anywhere. But I do enjoy her books *shrugs*. Orson Scott Card I read years back and as much as I dislike the things I now know about him, Ender's Game was a huge thing. Unwind gave me nightmares. THAT SCENE. You know the one ;) I still can't read it without feeling very freaked out.
Brandon is just a plain good writer and I love the thought he puts into his magic systems. But the thing that really sucked me in is learning about the Cosmere. Basically, all of his books (except the YA ones and short stories) happen in the same universe and there are crossover characters... it's like... the book version of Easter Eggs *breathes into paper bag
( ... )
I'd heard about that, but I have such big gaps between reading his works and they're so full of little details to pick up on that it's mostly passed me by. I like it as a concept, but the idea of working it all out intimidates me a bit. I think maybe because i'm not in the midset for that kind of epic worldbuilding at the moment *shrugs*. Haha, I hadn't thought of them as Easter Eggs. That works really well actually :D
True. I like the concept of speaking for the dead, and that being the arc of Ender's character development, but the stories themselves just don't match up. I did enjoy the Bean books, the impact of having all those kids returning to Earth and what happened to everyone. Ugh, the ending. Yep, watery.

I can't pick up the other Unwind books either!
Interesting, I shall make a note :)
