This weekend's review: A Hatful of Rain.

I knew going into A Hatful of Rain that it was a movie centering around drug addiction. While it ran the risk of being preachy, it also had a decent chance of being pretty harrowing, similar to The Lost Weekend or, to a lesser extent, The Man With the Golden Arm. I get it that you don't find the characters sympathetic or likeable. But are they interesting?

Yes, I think I'd say so. The hints of Johnny's addiction backstory and the different facets of Polo certainly qualify as interesting. Celia has her moments too, but she's a bit more of a stock character. If you have more tolerance for the dysfunction on display or are trying to analyze the movie, those sorts of things would probably stand out more. For me, though, the unpleasantness mostly drowned out everything else.
