Standing on the Line - [New Enterprise, Riviera, Kalòn Kakòn]

The Enterprise was in top form, which pretty much meant there wasn't really anything for a low-rated technician to do, not even for four hours.  Scotty reported, and Riley (the native) told him that he could just use the time to familiarize himself with the systems and work on updating his body of knowledge to keep up when they did need a quick repair tech.  He hadn't seen his counterpart, though he knew the older Scott was around, but Scotty didn't seek him out.  Just did his job, and since Riley never specified where, Scotty studied whilst sitting in the front seat of the Riviera.

He'd occasionally read out and comment on different things he studied, though the Riviera couldn't really answer.  Just aimlessly speaking, for no reason other than to break the silence.

Now that he had a proper access code to the systems, once his four hours were up, he headed to the nearest terminal to try out some of the new stuff that he'd learned.  Namely speaking, the systems dealing with external sensors, since it seemed those needed repaired more than once aboard this Enterprise.  He worked his way around the controls, using one sensor node to practice with, that wasn't particularly in use by any other division or crewmember.

Almost inevitably, he stumbled across the Kalòn Kakòn.

Scotty wasn't privy to what had been going on, but he was still wired to be an engineer, even if he'd never quite made it.  He knew what a pirate ship looked like; generally, it looked like it was comprised of on-the-fly engineering of various qualities.  This particular pirate ship looked like she'd taken some ugly damage, but was basically well-engineered with the piecemeal parts and scavenged items that were a hallmark of such vessels, who couldn't just go and pull up to the nearest legitimate drydock and buy parts.  Regardless, she looked like a sturdy enough ship (at least in better days), with a surprisingly high warp capacity considering.

Now fascinated with it -- and, in general, in a state of serious emotional disconnect from his current surroundings -- Scotty keyed in to pull all sensor power that wasn't already allocated (on no-priority, so those who needed the sensors could have them back instantly, cutting him off), and scanned the pirate vessel more thoroughly.

She wasn't new; he could recognize, actually, large pieces of her technology as being much closer to what he was familiar with than this new Enterprise was.  Sturdy, unadorned and mostly very durable.

He wasn't really thinking of ramifications again when he pulled up the engineering roster.  Apparently, all parties had now returned from the vessel over there, her radiation leak having been contained.  They had the vessel in tow, at impulse.  He figured the ship would be forfeit to Starfleet, once it was all said and done, so he wasn't really going to go look at a pirate ship... he was going to see about salvage potential.

Scotty was still well-aware of the two sides of the Federation -- the shiny public side, and the dark underside.  And, like one of the many lost children throughout generations, he did not know which side he belonged on, though he had tried very hard to always be honorable regardless.  But the idea of crawling around a pirate ship appealed to him on many levels, and some of which he didn't even know existed.

He started plotting in his mind how to get over there.
