In Praise of Patience

Patience pays off! Scout is getting more and more in tune with stock. I finally found a method that works for the displacement behavior. The first step was recognizing what the behavior was. She is really interested in stock, but if she feels they are out of reach, she grabs for something else. Sheep poop, grass, even gravel. She does the ( Read more... )

I am glad you are going to sheep camp, that will be a good herding emersion for you. And, it will be fun to see both you and Steve out there running Tristan!

That will be fun! Looking forward to the immersion and I'm really excited about Steve taking a victory lap with Tristan! Of course, hopefully T will earn that MACH 3, but I think he can. He's a really consistent guy and with the new point schedule for 24 inch dogs, we rack up lots of points in standard. Jumpers is a bit tougher, since the courses seem to have gotten a bit harder or seem a bit tigher wheeled, so I'll run the majority of those (being much faster than Steve :)) But when the Mach is near, Steve will do the whole thing. Frankly, this is really for the Steve/Tristan moment. As I mentioned to auseez, poor Seamus contracted a common parasite that sometimes can hit the little guys hard. He's on the mend but no strenuous training for awhile.

I'm sorry about Seamus! What parasite is it? I'm glad to hear he is on the mend.

That will be such a cool experience for Steve. :-)

Love hearing about your herding experiences. I took lessons years ago with my first dog and it was the hardest dog "sport" I have ever tried!

Since I've added more dogs and more dog sports, I don't have the time. I have two working bred Aussies now and have thought how I could fit this in (time and money). Jeb has worked goats with his Daddy - he was quite calm and thoughful about his work. Ava was not very brave - ran in and out taking cheap shots.

What kind of dog is Seamus? How fun to have a family MACH!

Seamus is our border terrier. He's mostly Steve's dog, but his training has been put on hold while he recovers from a parasitic infection that impacted his energy level. So it occured to me... have Steve work on finishing Tristan's Mach! Tristan will work for Steve and he's really excited about it.

I agree- herding is the hardest thing ever- at least for us. But we do enjoy it so much so that we took the entire summer off from agility. I can't really do agility trialing and herding trialing at the same time, since I can only do herding on the weekends. I tried just doing a Friday trial once, but with work and the logistics, I felt I was putting too much pressure on myself.

Corgi2bc amazes me... she does it all!
