You might not want to hear this.... but here goes:

My friend Kattie went to The New School (in NYC) for one year. She enjoyed the city in general, but everyone there made her feel like shit simply because she is from Texas. They had definite assumptions and made them known to her (exclusion from study groups, no friends, opinions being cut down in class by professors.) She is the most progressive person I know, which is saying A LOT.

Maybe she just had a freak bad experience, maybe it is just The New School, but it says a great deal to me. I wouldn't go to grad school in NYC just by her stories alone.

I understand not wanting to go to college in your hometown. Among a billion other reasons, I didn't go to Baylor.... because it is in Waco, ha.

I've heard bad things about The New School. Plus, Devendra Banhart went there. I felt slightly better about Don Henley hearing that.

valid experience, thank you. i'm wondering if you thought i was talking about the new school though. new college is in florida - a little safer southern prejudice wise i think. but i've pretty much decided not to go there because i'll sign myself up for a major i'll fail at: russian literature and language

I was dead set on getting out of Texas until I actually started looking at schools and then that kind of ran into a wall. My dream college for years was Evergreen in Olympia. Uppity liberal spot that Kathleen Hannah, Matt Groening and Calvin Johnson all went. The university in Portland is really pretty and I've heard good things about it. My dad actually went to the University of Maryland offshoot in Baltimore and dug it though that was admittedly a long time ago and he was in a pretty specific department (photography et al).
If you end up staying in Texas and regardless of how much shit I talk about it, Texas State could be worse. It does have the advantages of living in Austin without actually having to live in Austin which is nice. The people (faculty and students) are kind of hit or miss but there are some good eggs among the dude bros, less of an issue if you don't dorm.

i know this sounds bad but i looked for acredited sw program, far away enough from my parents that they wouldn't snoop on me but close enough if i needed anything and price of course.
