Ayanna says: edamame good, wasabi bad

My cousin Jen is in town, with her one-year-old, and the three of us went out for dinner tonight. Ayanna hadn't had a nap this afternoon, so she was really sleepy, and we thought she would just sleep through dinner. She fell asleep in the car, but when we got inside the sushi place, she wanted to be awake and watch everyone. And, apparently, to eat. She took apart and ate a couple of pieces of sushi. Then while Jen and I were talking, and not guarding the plates carefully enough, Ayanna grabbed an edamame-sized glob of wasabi and ate it. And started screaming. It seems that the sushi place Jen and her husband go to in Berkeley gives you a small bowl of edamame with your meal, and Ayanna loves it, and since wasabi is exactly the same color, there was no convincing her it was something else until she had a mouthful of hot. So, we got an order of edamame for her, and she ate those along with some more fish.

It had been so long since I'd been out for sushi, I had forgotten how much I like it when it's really good. I called Brent to tell him the first coat of paint is on the house (I can't talk about it yet- I can't decide if I like it), and told him Jen was here. He said, "Ok, good, so I don't have to feel guilty about going for sushi this afternoon without you, then."
