This is pretty much exactly how I imagined it going down in the Epitaph future, but I don't think I had really fully considered the ramifications of them meeting up in this future-gone-awry, and all the weight that they're both carrying and just... Penny :[

Here are my favorite bits, mostly because each of them HURTS in the best possible way:

She catalogs his differences like a penance.

She envies him the easy judgment he passes on people like her.

That he knows her face, her eyes, all through the plasma flat of a TV screen. That for him, the distance between them is endless. For her, it’s just heartbeats.

UGH, and really liked using that formatting from the first story, and I think you beat me in making that last line a sucker punch because -

She slides her hands up his shoulders, across the plane of his back, and wonders if he’ll remember (remember the sex, remember the crossword, remember anything about

UGH, OMG. THIS JUST BROKE ME APART. The way it works with Meg's as a perfect continuation of the former in the same way the show divided its plot into present/future is just UGGGGGGGGGGGH, perfect. And I am so devastated and I hope that some day Penny will tell him about their past but at the same time I'm in love with the fact that she loves him still so much that she doesn't want to burden him with that or think less of her and AAAACHAGFJ;LKFASDFAS;LDKFJS I love this verse so much, I could cry.

I totally missed this first time around, and I'm so glad that the master post led me to it, because obviously what I needed tonight was to read this lovely thing, and cry a little, and then go back and read Meg's, and cry a little more, and then come back to this one and appreciate all of the ways in which you echoed the original while making something new and wonderful.

Ugh, I miss Dollhouse so much. But this helped.
