“Mom… Dad. I need to tell you something.” The sixteen year old Alex said, barely able to keep his breathing even. His parents looked up from watching TV. He had their attention. It was now or never. Preferably never, but Alex felt like it wasn’t the right thing to do.
“What is it, Alex?” His dad asked, looking expectedly at him. Alex sucked in and sat down in one of the recliners. He couldn’t say this without passing out.
“I’m… gay.” He said slowly, testing the words out, but they were already out there. At first his parents started laughing. He didn’t expect this.
“Isobel, is it April?” His father asked, laughing.
“No, it’s not April. I’m not kidding!” Alex said, getting kind of angry that they thought he would joke about something like this. His parents stopped laughing. Suddenly the room was eerily quiet.
“You’re… kidding, Alex. You are.” His mother said, as if her statement would change the fact that her son liked boys. Alex stood up, aghast.
“I’m. Serious.” He said, on the verge of tears.
“Don’t you talk back to your mother!” His father roared unexpectedly. Alex stumbled back, almost tripping over the chair.
“Dad…” He started, but didn’t quite finish. His father advanced on him quickly, shoving him against the wall. Alex felt fear pulsing through him. “Dad! Please! I’m sorry. I had to tell you. I was scared. I didn’t want to do this alone!” He yelled frantically.
“You… are not my son.” He said before shoving Alex to the ground. “Get out!” He bellowed. Alex couldn’t believe this. His mother was just staring, not even trying to help him out.
“Mom, please…” He said, standing back up, feeling choked. She just shook her head and looked away from him as if she couldn’t bear to look at her son.
His father started towards him again, but he was already running out the door, trying hard not to cry, but it was all in vain. Why couldn’t he have just kept his fucking mouth shut? He barely looked to see where he was going when he was running.
When he’d finally stopped, he was at the playground. It was pitch black outside and he could hear people laughing. He really didn’t want any human interaction right now.
Apparently, though, his night had to get worse before it got better.
“Gaskarth… fancy seeing you here at this hour.” He heard Zack’s voice.
“Fuck…” He cursed silently, hoping he could get out of there before anyone else noticed.
“Hey, why don’t you stay for a while?” He heard another voice. Jeremy McKinnon. Okay, he was fucked.
“What do you guys want with me?” Alex asked, exasperated. Nothing really could hurt more right now than being disowned by your parents. Not even getting the shit beat out of you. Zack and Jeremy were a bit surprised by his lack of concern for his well-being.
“C’mon and hang out with everyone.” Zack said, grabbing the back of Alex’s head. It was useless. Alex was half his size. He pulled him along to a group of people having a fire near the base of a tree. They stopped talking when Zack appeared, dragging Alex along.
“Just leave me alone!” Alex yelled, not about to be humiliated further. He struggled to get out of his grip, but got nowhere. If anything, he was just more drained.
“Not quite yet, buddy. We’re going to have a little fun.” Jeremy said as Zack pushed him to the ground. Really? It was the second time in the last hour that he had found himself on the ground. He could feel the heat of the fire burning his face and he tried to stand up, but not before he felt a foot in his stomach.
“Fuck…” He wheezed, coughing. Everyone roared with laughter. He never got that about teenagers. Why did they find it funny when the dumb bullies kicked around people when they were already down, metaphorically and literally?
“Come on, you need to just relax. Enjoy the fire.” He heard someone say. He wasn’t sure who because his head was spinning. He felt the flamed nearly licking his face and he flinched away. The laughter sounded a little nervous now.
“Zack, come on. I think that’s a little much.” Alex heard someone say. He recognized Rian’s voice. Figures. He though Rian was a decent kid that didn’t hand out with Zack’s crew. At least he was trying to save his face from a life of disfigurement.
“You just shut the fuck up, Dawson.” Jeremy spat. Suddenly Alex heard sirens. Or at least he thought he did. It might have been the ringing in his head.
“Police!” Someone yelled and just like that, everyone dispersed. Thank God they’d forgotten about Alex. He inched away from the fire, leaning back on his elbows, taking short and shallow breaths.
“Hey, is anyone there?” He heard a voice. It was the most beautiful voice he’d ever heard, mainly because it wasn’t Jeremy’s or Zack’s.
A boy his age poked his head around the tree, taking in Alex. He walked over and knelt beside him.
“Hey, you okay, Alex?” The boy asked. How did he know his name?
“No… I’m really not.” Alex confessed. “But… how do you know me?” He asked, biting his lip. He wasn’t about to cry in front of this kid.
“We have biology together.” The boy said. Alex really looked at him now. He couldn’t keep his breathing even now. The boy was beyond gorgeous. Now he remembered him. So clearly. He often found himself gawking at him during class.
“Jack. I’m Jack.” The boy added, offering Alex a hand to stand up. They both stood up and Alex felt his face. It was still hot and he figured he looked like a total mess.
“What happened?” Jack asked, looking down at Alex, worry swimming in his dark eyes.
“Just bullies…” Alex lied, his voice shaking.
“It’s not just that. I can tell.” Jack said. Alex hadn’t realized how close they were until now. His heart was daring to beat out of his ribs.
“It’s not. I…” He stopped for a moment. Was he really going to tell him about being gay? Nobody knew except for his parents and that experience wasn’t the best.
“Just parent trouble I guess.” He said, trying to act nonchalant.
Jack put a hand on the side of Alex’s face and it took his whole being not to lean into the taller boy and just sob.
“Why are you being so nice to me?” Alex asked, saying what he was thinking.
“Because… I’m a nice person. And…” Jack sighed, looking into Alex’s eyes. “I’ve always liked you…” He said, hoping it wasn’t coming out weird.
“R-really?” Alex asked, stunned. Jack laughed softly.
“Yeah… I’ve always wanted to get to know you, but you always leave class before I can talk to you and I never see you any other time. You’re a mystery.” He said, his words affectionate.
“Well… you’re allowed to get to know me. I would love that.” Alex said, hoping he didn’t sound like an overexcited girl. Jack seemed to be okay with it though.
“Alright…” He said, getting even closer. “Can I start now, then?” He asked. Alex couldn’t take it.
He pressed his lips to the other boy’s and hoped for the best. Hoped he wouldn’t push away and yell at him about “that’s not what I meant!”. But he didn’t.
In fact, Jack took it upon himself to deepen it, pulling the smaller boy closer to him so they were pressed against one another.
Alex was the first to pull away, although reluctantly. Jack looked a little disappointed as their lips parted.
“That… that’s why I’m having parent troubles.” Alex said breathlessly.
But, hell, if coming out to his parents caused this, he was alright with it. Jack looked a little worried for him, but Alex didn’t even care about his parents anymore. He eagerly kissed Jack again, never wanting to let go. He wanted them to be like this always.
