Disclaimer: I don't own anyone and the title cred goes to Fall Out Boy.
A/N: Just a little cutesy Christmas story. I felt obligated to do so after reading so many awesome ones. :)
"For fuck's sake, Jack. You know I hate Christmas." Alex said peevishly as his best friend attempted to wrestle him into an ugly Christmas sweater, adorned with glitter and little reindeer.
"I know you do, you scrooge, but that doesn't mean I'm not taking you to a party." Jack said, out of breath. They were both on the floor, winded and lying on their backs. "I don't even get why you hate the damn holiday so much." Jack insisted, rolling onto his side and glaring at Alex.
"I think I've explained myself enough." Alex said, rolling his eyes.
"Yeah, yeah... 'It's so materialistic and... santa touched me when I was a kid-'." Jack started, using a voice that sounded nothing like Alex to quote him.
"Shut the fuck up. I don't sound like that." Alex said, pulling himself up to rest on his elbows. Jack merely laughed.
"Please, Lex... for me?" Jack asked, giving him those merciless puppy dog eyes. It didn't help that Jack's eyes were already very puppy-like and brown and beautiful... Alex sighed in defeat.
"Jesus, fine. If you'll shut up, I'll go, but I'm not wearing this damn sweater." Alex said, grinning and chucking the ugly thing at Jack, who caught it in a ball.
"You're no fun." Jack pouted, but gave his friend a surprise hug before going to his room to get ready. Alex felt a fluttering in his chest as he watched his friend walk away.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So, how do I look?" Jack asked, as he emerged from his room, hair perfect while wearing a red sweater that seemed to fit him very well. Alex's first reaction was 'Well, you look pretty freaking beautiful.'
"Gaaay..." Was what he said instead, though; with a well meaning chuckle though. Jack narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms.
"You're looking pretty fruity yourself." Jack countered, pointing at Alex's red button up with rolled up sleeves and a black tie.
"No, no... you're the fruity one, my dear." Alex said, moving closer and examining him in what seemed like a judgmental way.
"Oh God, you used the phrase 'my dear'. My gaydar is going nuts." Jack retorted.
Alex merely rolled his eyes once more, giving up. He took his friend's hand and smiled at him genuinely.
"Can we just go, my dear?" Alex asked suddenly shy. Jack's cheeks felt warm. He'd never felt anything like... flattered when Alex talked to him.
"Of course." Jack said, not knowing how to feel. Hand in hand still, they walked out the front door.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"This party blows, Jack. Don't even try to tell me it doesn't." Alex said, feeling his plastic cup crinkle in his grip as he pondered just leaving and walking home. Jack looked a little hurt though and Alex immediately felt awful. "I'm just kidding, Jackary." Alex said, using Jack's stupid nickname.
Jack still looked a little bummed though. But Alex could tell it wasn't from Alex's comment.
"What's wrong?" Alex asked, knowing his friend well enough to know that when he wasn't a chatterbox or just too tired to talk, he wasn't feeling well.
"I think I'm just getting a cold or something..." He lied, looking sheepishly at his shoes. In fact, it seemed Jack was looking anywhere but at Alex the whole night. Alex sighed and grabbed his friend's hand, dragging him to the nearest unoccupied room. He shut the door, blocking out the sound of conversation and music.
"Tell me what's wrong." Alex ordered. Jack covered his face with his hands and shook his head. Alex simply took them off his face and held them. "Seriously." Alex said softly.
Jack let out an exasperated breath and pulled away from him.
"This party actually does suck..." Jack admitted. He looked so broken and defeated, Alex wanted to hug him, but he held his ground. There was more to it. He sat down next to the raven haired boy on the bed.
"I thought you loved parties and Christmas." Alex said, looping his arm around Jack's shoulders and pulling him closer. Jack just shook his head.
"No... no. It's not the fact that it's Christmas... I just..." Jack couldn't find the words. "Okay, I guess it is..." He said. Alex was still thoroughly confused.
"Do you... Do you remember Josh? That English kid I was friends with for a while?" Jack asked, biting his lip and looking away from Alex, down at his hands. Alex nodded. "Well... He wasn't exactly just a friend..." Jack said. Suddenly it clicked. Of course. How had Alex been so stupid not to see it? Jack was heartbroken. And Alex had never even realized...
"Oh... Oh. You were... together?" Alex asked. He had always had hunches about his best friend's sexuality, but he'd never actually assumed he was actually gay. Jack shook his head.
"Remember the day we just... stopped being friends?" Jack asked, leaning into Alex more, laying his head on the other boy's chest. "Well, he'd broken up with me... for no reason. I mean... I guess there was a reason but..." He stopped, breathing in sharply. "He did it on Christmas last year." Jack said, his voice a bit shaky.
"Well obviously that bastard was blind as a bat..." Alex said, pressing his lips to the top of Jack's head. "And all this time... I thought you just associated Christmas with good things." He added.
"I do. That's the only way to get past it. I don't want that to taint me, you know? But it did." Jack said, finally looking up at his friend. "And..." Jack started, but didn't know how to say what he wanted to.
"Today when you took my hand, I felt different. I forgot about Josh." Jack said, cheeks reddening. Alex couldn't help but grin. So he wasn't crazy after all.
"What are you saying, Mr. Barakat?" Alex asked, tilting Jack's head towards him before he could look away again. Jack could feel his heart fluttering.
"Well, I sort of forgot what I was actually going to say..." Jack said, feeling his heart pound.
"Were you going to maybe say... 'I'm sort of in love with my best friend and I would love to give him a nice kiss for coming to this awful party.'?" Alex asked hopefully, going out on a limb and hoping he wouldn't fall off. But before he could even make it sound like a question, Jack was already agreeing.
He kissed Alex softly, sighing at how perfect it seemed. His best friend was there all along and he never even knew how he felt about him until now. But something inside made him think it was always there and he had always felt that way about him.
"Merry Christmas, Jack." Alex said as he pulled away slightly. But Jack could not have cared less about Christmas at the moment as he pulled his best friend in for another kiss.
