“Where’s Jack?” Alex asked as he took a bite of the school’s version of pizza. It looked more like a rock with red paint on it, kinda tasted like it too.
“Probably getting high with some chicks,” Rian said.
“He cuts school a lot. Doesn’t bother to show up to class. He’s definitely partying it up right now. The jerk didn’t even bother to invite us.” Zack grumbled.
But Alex had a sinking feeling in his gut. He knew that Jack wasn’t absent because he was sleeping with girls. Alex has hurt him enough to make him miss school.
“Could he be sick?” Alex asked, worried.
“Maybe.” Rian shrugged. “Dude, shill, why are you so worried? Don’t be surprised if he’s absent. Be surprised if he’s here.”
“I don’t think he’s ever been absent.” Alex pointed out.
“That’s only since he met you. I think he comes to school most of the time, only to see you. He used to barely come, but then he met you.”
“I doubt it,” Alex said.
“Why?”
“Because how could I have that effect on him?”
“Are you blind? Do you not see how he looks at you?” Rian asked incredulously.
“I guess?”
“Clearly you are blind. He looks at you like you’re freaking god or something. I don’t get who you don’t see it.”
“I just don’t, I mean, I don’t notice.”
“It’s cause he looks at him the same way.” Zack chimed in.
Alex frowned. “I do?”
“Yeah you do! You stare at him like you’re seeing him for the first time everyday.”
“Well, he’s gorgeous, I’m not used to it.”
“You’re so weird.” Rian laughed. “But seriously, don’t worry, he’ll be fine.”
“I hope,” Alex whispered.
Alex texted Jack: Jack? Where are you?
Three minutes later Jack texted back: I’m at home.
Alex texted: Are you ok?
But Jack never texted back. Alex waited all day.

Alex walked into his kitchen, grabbing a bottle of juice from the fridge. He opened it, chugging it’s contents.
“Alex, that’s a nasty habit!” his mom walked up to him, snatching the bottle.
“Mom, who cares?” Alex wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
“I do. Daniel must’ve taught you that.”
“He’s dead.” Alex said it with no emotion, his voice flat.
“Before he died, sweetie,” Alex’s mom mumbled quietly.
“He didn’t teach me anything. Or anything good at least.” It was true, Alex could follow Daniel’s example, if he wanted to. Daniel had taught him how to ruin the family, how to drink himself into oblivion.
“Alex, please don’t be upset.”
“I’m fine mom. I just hate it when you say I do things he used to do. I sorta don’t want to follow in his footsteps.”
“I see. I sure hope not. Alex, honey, please don’t be upset. Go to sleep, it’s late. I love you.”
His mother leaned in and kissed his forehead then lightly pushed him towards the stairs. Alex made his was upstairs and collapsed onto his bed. He needed a way to get all of his frustration out, so he started to write.
