Alex's eyes flickered towards the window facing the other car.

Jack followed his gaze. He saw Haylee sitting in a bench, nervously arranging her hair. The surfer looking guy stood over Haylee and kept trying to kiss Haylee. Haylee pushed him away, over and over. The guy didn't give up and kept bending down. Eventually, Haylee gave in and they kissed.

Jack flinched. That hurt. Especially since Haylee was the one who had come up with these contracts, saying that they would never cheat on each other, no matter what. That if one of them had become unhappy with the relationship, they should say so and it would be over. But to never ever cheat.

Alex sat uncomfortably next to Jack, not sure what to do. When he had been in Jack's position, he had become obsessed with his girlfriend, not spending anytime with his friends. So when he found out Lisa had cheated on him, he had nobody to turn to.

Jack looked at Alex. “It's okay I guess. We're still young. It wouldn't have lasted anyway.” he said, looking nostalgic.

“You might be right about that, but it still wasn't right for her to cheat on you.” Alex said, thinking that this was what his brother and best friend, Tom would say.

“I think I'll break up with her, then write a long letter to that surfer guy about all her quirks and how she won't have sex unless you cook dinner for her.” Jack said, thinking of a plan, something that would make it seem like he cared, but not too much.

Alex laughed. “Well, things will get better eventually. How long were you guys together for?”

Jack thought about it. September, when they had sat next to each other in class. October 18th, when he had asked her out. Today was February 6th. “4 months in 12 days.” Jack muttered, now worrying about whether or not Tiffany's would take back the necklace he had bought Haylee.

“So it'll take you about 8 months to get over her I guess?” Alex said, in a joking tone as if he didn't believe in the theory that said it took you twice as long as the relationship to get over someone.

“Are you saying that theory isn't true?” Jack wondered.

“Yeah, I guess. I mean I was with Lisa for 1 month.” Alex paused, then took a deep breath. “It took me 4 months to get over her. I guess it didn't help that I had 7 out of 9 classes with her.”

Jack sighed. This is why Jack found it ironic when girls said that guys were all the same. Jack had had 4 girlfriends and 1 boyfriend since he was 16. 2 had cheated on him, and now Haylee. That made 3 out of 5 relationships that had been ruined because he was cheated on. Was there something about Jack that people just didn't like? What was it. Jack was honestly perplexed, wondering if it was true, that nice guys finish last.

“What?” Alex asked, confused.

“Hmm?” Jack looked at Alex still pondering over the fact that 3/5 of his relationships had ended with the other person cheating.

“You just said 'Is it true? Nice guys finish last?'” Alex repeated.

“Oh. I was thinking, I hadn't thought I said that out loud.” Jack continued on, explaining. “I've been in 5 relationships. 3 of them were ruined because the other had cheated. I'm a pretty nice guy. There's this song, called Nice Guys. Have you heard of it?”

Alex examined Jack. How could someone cheat on someone with Jack's face? Was that even possible? “No I haven't.-”

Alex was interrupted by the sight of an old lady coming on the subway. The subway had stopped, according to a sign on the station outside, they were at 9th Avenue.

Jack got up, placing a hand on the old lady's shoulder and guiding her towards his now vacant seat. The lady sat down with difficulty, trying to keep her balance. She was so old that you could almost hear her bones creaking.

“Thank you honey.” The woman said in a raspy voice.

“It's no big deal.” Jack said, smiling politely at her.

Jack looked at Alex, saying “We get off next stop anyway. Why don't you get up, it might get crowded at the next stop.”

Alex was moved. Alex hadn't ridden the tube much in England, but the times he did, not that many people seemed to want to give up their seats for the elderly. Alex got up, giving the old lady a smile.

Jack looked out the window, into the darkness of the underground tunnels, with his eyebrows knit together, seemingly thinking hard.

Alex stood there, wondering what he was even doing in New York.
