Rian moved his hand onto the back of Zack’s neck pulling him closer. He started to move his tongue along Zack’s bottom lip before he realised what he was doing. Rian pushed the bigger boy off of him and jumped to his feet.

“What was..? I-I can’t do this,” he stumbled backwards out the door, leaving Zack lying on the floor, confused.

He sat up leaning against Rian’s bed, looking at the floor, replaying what had just happened in his head.

“Why did I just do that?!” he groaned, smacking himself on the back of the head. Standing up, he saw the picture of him and Rian taken earlier that year, before he got with Kara, on Rian’s bedside table. He smiled to himself, remembering how good that day was. He heard a smash coming from downstairs that brought him back to reality.

He climbed over the people sat on the stairs before looking around the room. His eyes locked onto Rian who quickly looked away and ran over to see what the damage was.

Zack sighed and went outside to the garden. He saw Jack and Alex as well as a few others sat on the patio. He walked over and told them he was going. They tried to stop him, telling him to keep out of Kara’s way for the rest of the evening. He wished they would stop going on about her.

“It’s nothing to do with her. Really! I’m just feeling a bit rough. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he told them, pointing towards the door.

“Bye Zachary!” Alex and Jack shouted in unison causing them both to break out into laughter.

Zack giggled at that. It made him happy that Alex and Jack had a friendship like that; one where they could say the same thing at exactly the same time.

Zack was just about to open the front door when he saw Rian sat on the stairs. He knew he couldn’t just leave things how they were, so he slowly walked over to the older boy.

“Look, Rian. About befo-,“ Zack began.

“Zack. Don’t. I don’t wanna hear it. Not here. Not now,” Rian said, shaking his head but keeping his eyes locked onto the floor.

“But Ri, I need to explain what that was!” Zack said, trying to make himself heard above the music and chatter from the other rooms.

“No Zack! I know what it was. I can’t deal with this now,” He went to stand up and Zack placed his hand on Rian’s shoulder who immediately saw red and pushed him away. “Just get out, Zack!” were the final words he shouted before walking away.

Zack just stood there following him with his eyes as he walked over to Kara, she leaned in to place a peck on Rian’s lips but he pulled away. Zack smiled before leaving through the front door.

------------------------**------------------------

The next day dragged by for Zack. He was waiting for final period, English. The only one he shared with Rian. Zack hadn’t seen him all day and just thought he’d been avoiding him, but once the teacher arrived and there was still no sign of Rian, Zack knew he was avoiding him.

The lesson seemed to go on for hours. Zack didn’t really care about Shakespeare. Not when he had other things on his mind.

When the bell finally rang, he ran out of the classroom and straight towards his locker, shoving the books he didn’t need in and getting ones he did out.

In the five minutes it had taken for him to get from the classroom to his locker, the rain that had previously been little spots decided to become a tropical storm.

Zack groaned running from the entrance to his car, before diving inside. He grabbed his phone out of his bag and began to text Rian.

Where were you today? Thought we were gonna talk?

He questioned whether or not to send it before finally hitting the ‘send’ button.

He waited for a few minutes before starting the engine just in case Rian replied. It wasn’t until Zack pulled out of his parking space that he heard his phone beeping.

“Dammit!” he said, pulling the car over into an empty spot. The text was from Rian. Zack took a deep breath before opening it, expecting a lot of swearing or Rian simply saying that nothing had happened; he hadn’t seen Zack since the party started. The reply he did get however surprised him.

I know. I’m sorry. Can you ring me when you get this?

“Ring him? What for?” Zack asked allowed, even though nobody was there to answer his question. He stared at his phone and the highlighted Rian on the screen, before eventually pressing the call button.

It rang for white a while and just as Zack was about to end the call, Rian picked up.

“Hello?” He sounded distant. It was like he regretted asking Zack to ring him.

“Hey, is everything okay? Why weren’t you in school today?” He asked, concern in his voice.

“I’m fine. I just couldn’t.... I needed to tidy up the mess from the party,” Zack knew he was lying. Rian was one of the cleaned people he knew. He tidied up everything straight away.

“Zack, can you come over? I don’t wanna talk about this over the phone.”

“Yeah sure, I’ll be over in about 10 minutes. That okay?”

“Yeah, sure. See ya, “ then he hung up, leaving Zack sat in the school parking lot wondering what the hell was about to happen.

------------------------**------------------------

Zack pulled up outside Rian’s house and just sat there for a minute, before he saw the curtain flicker from the living room. He got out of the car and ran through the rain towards Rian’s porch. He took a deep breath before knocking on the door.

Rian answered as soon as Zack’s hand reached his side and he smiled at him, stepping aside to let the younger boy in.

Zack walked into the living room and sat down on one side of the chair, Rian sitting down the other side. It was silent for a while and both boys sat awkwardly trying to keep eye contact to a minimal.

Rian was the first to speak with a simple “I’m sorry” leaving his lips.

“What? What have you got to be sorry for? It was me who kissed you. I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I’ve wanted to for ages and everyone keeps on going on about me fancying Kara, and I need you to know that I don’t, so I figured, if I showed you how I felt, maybe you would believe me when I say it isn’t Kara I want.” Zack knew he was babbling, but he needed to tell Rian who was just sat there staring at Zack.

“Zack, I’ve tried for so long to keep these feeling to myself. I’ve tried to pass it off as just being teenage confusion. You kissing me has just made them all come back. I liked it. Maybe more than I should have, but I’m with Kara, nothing can happen between us, Zack. You’re my best friend. I don’t want to ruin what we have, but I can’t hide how I feel. Not now i know you feel exactly the same.”

Zack honestly had no idea what to say to that. He never in a million years expected Rian to say he felt the same. He moved along the sofa so he was sat next to Rian. He put his hand on top of his and intertwined their fingers. Rian let out a sigh and closed his eyes.

“She doesn’t have to know. I’ll give you time. I know you want this as much as I do,” Zack whispered, moving his hand from Rian’s and placing it on the back of his neck.

Rian turned his head to look at his friend, where they more than that now? He slowly moved his face towards Zack’s and placed his lips on his.

“I’ll tell her. I’ll tell her when we know this going somewhere,” He said, pulling Zack into a hug.

“Like I said, I’ll give you time,” Zack replied, returning the hug, squeezing his arms around Rian’s waist.
