The first thing Jack saw when he walked into school the next day was Alex standing by his locker. The butterflies that erupted in Jack’s stomach each time he saw Alex once began again but this was the first time he actually liked it. He saw a small smile form on Alex’s face once he noticed Jack walking towards him.
“Hey,” Alex greeted when Jack reached his locker.
“Hey, what are you waiting here for?” Jack asked as he put the lockers combination in.
“Waiting for you?” Jack laughed at the way Alex said it as if it was obvious. “And to see what you have first period.”
“Social studies.” Jack said, giving an unenthusiastic thumbs up.
“Is it important?” Alex asked and Jack raised an eyebrow. “I mean, does it matter if you miss it.”
“Probably not. We never do anything anyway. Why?”
“I want to talk to you.” He paused before noticing the worried look on Jack’s face before quickly adding “Don’t worry. It’s nothing bad.”
“Okay, sure.” And with that, Jack shut his locker door and the two boys made their way outside the main entrance of the school.

Knowing that there was a high possibility that the principal would be wandering around making sure everyone was where they should be, Jack and Alex managed to get past Mr Jenkins at the gates and began walking towards the Starbucks down the street.
“What do you want?” Alex asked Jack whilst looking at the menu boards behind the counter.
“I’ll get it.” Jack told him reaching for his wallet before Alex’s hand grabbed his wrist.
“No. I’ll get it, really. What do you want?”
Jack thought for a moment taking in all the names of the drinks before settling on a cappuccino.
“Really? A cappuccino? Nothing more adventurous?” Alex questioned, moving forward in the queue.
“Nope. Besides, I’m not an adventurous person,” Jack winked. “I’ll go get us a table.”
Alex nodded in Jack’s direction before the man behind the counter took his order.

Going upstairs Jack was surprised by how empty the place was but then remembered he never goes there that early so he didn’t really have anything to compare it to. Choosing the sofa chairs, Jack waited patiently for Alex to come up, finally seeing Alex climbing the last few stairs; walking carefully to make that sure he didn’t spill any of the drinks.
Placing the drinks on the table, Alex flopped down on the sofa opposite Jack.
“The one on the left is yours,” Alex pointed.
“Thanks. So, erm. What did you want to t-talk about?”
“You sound really nervous. You shouldn’t be because it’s not a bad thing. I don’t think it is anyway.”
“It’s ‘cause I know what it is you want to talk about and I know that it can either go one of two ways. The good way,” Jack said confidently, but his voice suddenly becoming a whisper as he finished, “or the bad way.”
“What way do you want it to go?” Alex questioned as he tried to hide a smile.
“Seriously, Alex? You really don’t know the answer to that?” Alex just shrugged and Jack rolled his eyes.
“What way do you want it to go? The good way or the bad way?” Jack sipped on his drink so that if Alex gave the answer Jack didn’t want to hear his disappointment would be disguised by the large mug.
“The good way.” Alex answered quickly making Jack choke slightly on the mouthful of coffee he had. “I want it to go the good way. I just don’t know anything about this. I mean nothing at all. All I do know right now is that I really like you Jack.”
“I really like you too,” Jack responded, a dopy grin on his face as he ducked his head.
“I just.. I don’t know how I’m going to explain it to people. ‘Cause I can hardly even explain it to you or myself. I just know that I like you more than a friend. Which is probably why I came round your house at a stupid time just to kiss you.” Alex was beginning to babble, and Jack found it adorable, voicing this to the older boy.
“See! I’m never like this. God, Jay. It’s your fault.” Alex laughed as he shook his head.
“Jay?” Jack found himself repeating the name Alex had just given him. Nobody had ever called him that before but he liked it; it was different.
“Er, yeah. It’s erm, it’s what I call you sometimes.” Alex’s eyebrows knotted together as he nodded his head. “I, er, I hope you don’t mind,” He laughed nervously as he reached forward to grab his drink, only Jack’s hand got in the way. Before he knew it, instead of gripping the cup infront of him, he was holding Jack’s hand across the table top.
“No, I don’t mind. I like it.” He told Alex as he linked their fingers together and reached for his cup with a smile.
