“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay? We’ll forget about Rian and just get on with the day like usual.” Jack scoffed at Alex’s words but nodded anyway.

“Jack, it’s going to be fine. You have to believe me.” Alex’s hand moved to Jack’s chin, lifting it so he could see him. Jack looked at him carefully for a minute, nodding again when he was sure the older boy was telling him the truth.

“I do, but it’s Rian, Alex. I can’t help it.” Jack sighed, hands reaching forward to Alex’s.

“I know Jack. I know what you’re talking about but you need to see that I’m not going to let him ruin this, okay?”

Jack closed his eyes, replaying the words Alex had said. He knew that Alex meant it when he said he wouldn’t let Rian ruin what they have. Jack knew that Alex would fight for them. That he would defend Jack again like he did that one time at school.

“I know. You should go. Your mom will kill me if I keep you here any longer.” Jack laughed, trying to get off the subject of Rian.

“Yeah, well. I’m sure I’d survive if she did.” Alex smirked, quickly looking over Jack’s shoulder, placing his hands on the younger boys hips as he made sure Jack’s mom was nowhere around.

“I don’t think I’d want to, though.” Alex whispered, pulling Jack closer to him. “’Cause I kinda like my life right now.”

“Do you have any idea how cheesy you sound sometimes?” Jack asked, smile tugging at his lips.

“Whatever,” Alex shrugged. “You love it so stop complaining.”

“Who said I was complaining?” Jack whispered, pressing his lips to Alex’s before he was able to reply. His tongue instantly wanting access to Alex’s mouth.

Alex parted his lips, allowing their tongues to gently brush together before Jack pulled away, dopey grin on his face.

“Go. Before you’re mom really does kill me.” He chuckled, pushing Alex back towards the front door.

“Fine, fine. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Alex smiled, leaning forward and quickly touching his lips to Jack’s own before bouncing out the door.

Jack stood in the threshold of the door, watching Alex walk down the road until he was no longer visible.

Smiling to himself, Jack closed the door and ran up to his room when he heard his phone beeping.

His smile however, quickly disappeared when he opened the message he suspected was from Alex.

Got ur number Barakat and u know that i know where u live. u go near alex again, i wont have any trouble getting hold of you

Jack swallowed the lump that had built up in his throat, re-reading the message over and over. Every word that Alex had said not even ten minutes ago had left Jack’s mind and were being replaced, once again by the fear he had before.

He pondered whether he should just listen to Rian. Especially if in the long run it would save both him and Alex the hassle of having to go through whatever it is that Rian had planned.

Then he remembered how Alex made him felt. Safe. As long as he was with Alex, he’d be fine, right?

Jack sighed as he looked at the red digits on his alarm clock. It was only quarter past ten, but after everything that had happened during the day, he decided to have an early night in the hope that when he wakes up, everything will just be back to normal and he wouldn’t have to worry about Rian anymore.

At school the next day, it was lunch time and Alex was waiting by his and Jack’s usual meeting spot. He’d been waiting for 5 minutes on his own, thinking that maybe Jack’s class had just been kept behind for some reason. That’s when he saw Zack walking down the corridor. Usually he walks with Jack and then goes off to meet some other friends, only today he was on his own.

“Hey, Zack!” Alex called across the hall. Zack looked up from his phone, nodding once at Alex.

“Hey. Everything okay?” He asked as he met Alex in the middle.

“Yeah, everything’s good. I was just wondering though. Where’s Jack?” Alex said carefully seeing Rian staring at the two of them out the corner of his eye.

“Yeah,” Zack nodded. “He just said he feels a bit ill today.”

“Oh.” Alex frowned. “He never said anything.”

“Maybe he just forgot. I’m sure there’s a reason for it.”

“Yeah, of course there is. I’m gonna give him a ring. Y’know, just to make sure.” Alex fixed the frown he was wearing and replaced it with a reassuring smile.

“Awesome. I’ve got to go and meet my friends, but I’ll see you around.”

“’Kay, see ya.”

He turned slightly, noticing the smirk on Rian’s face as he moved from the locker he was leant on.

“Prick,” Alex muttered under his breath, head shaking.

Alex just walked. He didn’t care where in the school grounds he ended up. He was just letting his feet take carry him.

It was when he ended up at the rock that he snapped back to reality. He didn’t understand why Jack just wouldn’t turn up. Every single class that Jack had previously had with Alex he had always been there. Always. It just wasn’t like him to miss school.

Sitting on the rock, he pulled out his phone, biting his lip as he stared out across the field.

“Why hasn’t he let me know he’s okay?” It was genuinely all Alex could think about. If Jack had been unable to meet him at the weekends, he’d let him know. Even though he knew that this wasn’t really the same sort of thing, Alex still figured he would.

Unlocking his phone and going to the phonebook, Alex went straight to Jack and pressed the call button.

It rang a few times before a shaky voice answered.

“Hello?”

“Jack, are you okay? Why aren’t you in school?”

“I’m fine, Alex. I just, I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Don’t think what’s a good idea? Are you sure you’re okay? I can always come over?”

“No, don’t.” Jack’s quick response threw Alex slightly and he wasn’t sure what he meant.

“W-why not?” Alex licked his lips as he nervously began tapping his foot on the ground beneath.

“I don’t think we should see each other anymore.” He paused slightly, and Alex could feel his eyes welling up as Jack said the one thing he thought he had managed to change his mind about. “I’m sorry.”
