Too late to say sorry - Part 4

Sian’s heart began to pound faster as the bus took her on its regular route to the hospital. It was times like this when she wished that she could drive. As the bus stopped at the Accident and Emergency department Sian felt her lungs fit to burst and she ran through the double doors and in to a very busy hospital.

The department was chaotic as Sian took in the scene, people sat holding tissues to their bloody noses, children crying and the hospital appeared very understaffed. The smell of bleach hit her nostrils as she walked towards the reception desk. The queue was long and she felt like just screaming, she needed to know what was wrong with Sophie, and she didn’t feel like waiting until the whole of Manchester had been seen before she could ask about her girlfriends condition.

Tapping her feet and pulling at her clothing she suddenly heard her voice being called, “Sian!” she turned to see a teary Rosie running over to her and she was pulled in to a hug. This scared Sian more than anything, the Webster’s were not a family that used hugs as a sign of love, in fact Sian could only think of once before when Rosie had hugged her when they had returned from running away. Sian now knew that something had happened to Sophie and that something was going to be bad.

Rosie released Sian and practically ran with her through the doors marked ‘Intensive Care’ Sian felt her feet stiffen and she stopped causing Rosie to nearly fall over. “Why are we here? How bad is it?” Sian said her voice shaking. Rosie’s eyes welled up, she didn’t answer she instead grabbed Sian’s hand as they ran through more doors to a very quiet waiting area.

As Sally saw Sian she looked at her and then grabbed her, pulling her in to a suffocating grip, Sian was still confused, Sally released her then spoke “I’m sorry I forgot to phone you, Sophie’s not well, she’s oh god, Sian sit down please” Sally beckoned, Sian felt her body react to the question and the softness of the chair cushioned her fall.

Sian raised her eyes to Sally as she began to speak “Sophie had an accident, she fell of the roof of the church”. That sentence caused Sian to take in a deep breathe, her eyes brimming with tears, a fall from the church that they attended would not end well she thought as Sally continued “She landed on a car, but she has some injuries, a broken arm, broken ribs and possible spinal damage” she cried. Sian felt that she couldn’t breathe, spinal damage, Sophie, her Sophie, the woman she loved.

“This isn’t happening” Sian cried out, “It can’t be happening”. Sally saw Sian change before her eyes from a young woman who loves her daughter to the terrified seventeen year old that she really was.

“Mrs Webster” a voice called out, Sally turned to see a doctor walking towards her, “Is it Sophie?” she asked, he nodded “Please follow me to the relatives room, I have some news”. Rosie looked at Sian, they linked hands and followed Sally and the doctor, now they would find out how bad the situation really was.
