Too late to say sorry - Part 9
Sian fell asleep holding Sophie’s hand, she awoke again to see Rosie sat at the other side of the bed, “You eaten?” she asked as Sian yawned “No”, Rosie passed her another cheese and pickle sandwich. A little while later the doctor came in just as Sally and Kevin turned up “How is she?” Sally asked, he picked up her chart, “Well she is stable and at the moment it appears that is the best to hope for, tests show that she has swelling to her brain and some damage, however for the height of her fall and her injuries I am optimistic about her recovery, we won’t know any more until she wakes which could be any time now”.
Sian grinned “Really? Like she could wake up in a minute”, the doctor nodded, “She has fractures as you were told before, however within a few months they will heal, we just need to wait and see what if any damage has occurred. We removed her breathing tube, so when she wakes up if she can speak we hope she will, I’ll leave you now, let me know if there is any change, if she wakes, talks etc ok”. Sian nodded and kissed Sophie’s hand, “See baby you’ll be back any time now”.
As another hour went by, followed by another hour, Sian got impatient “Soph, I’m missing our programme, ya know “Watchdog” wake up so we can watch it together please”. Sally and Kevin along with Rosie had left to get a snack they entered the room to see Sophie’s eyes open. “Sophie” Sally said alerting the others to her consciousness. “Soph” Sian said leaning nearer to her. Sophie opened her eyes then closed them, then opened them before speaking “Where am I?” she croaked, they smiled at her, she was talking fantastic. “I’ll get the doctor” Kevin said, texting Gail to find out how Jack was.
Sophie looked around “Mum, Rosie, Sian” she said each feeling relieved that she knew them, who they were, the doctor entered with Kevin, “So glad you’re awake Sophie, do you remember what happened?” Sophie shook her head, “Okay well what is the last thing you remember” he asked taking notes. “Well I remember talking to Sian online, she said she was coming to visit me”. Sian looked confused, “Soph, I’ve been on holiday, don’t you remember”. Sophie shook her head, “Ya phoned Ryan?” she asked, Sian shook her head, “No Soph we broke up last year, he’s at Uni”. Sophie rubbed her head “Don’t be silly, ooh have we got dates for the prom yet?”. Sian’s face fell.
Seeing Sian’s distress Rosie spoke “Soph, you know who Sian is right?” Sophie nodded “My best friend”. Rosie shook her head “Sian’s your girlfriend Soph, you’ve been together a year”. Sophie snorted “Stop winding me up Rosie, I aint gay, neither’s Sian”. There was silence, suddenly Sian couldn’t breathe, “I’ve gotta go” she cried running from the room, this couldn’t be happening Sophie couldn’t remember them, how much in love they were, anything.
Sobs racked her body as she slid down the wall to the floor, Rosie rushed to her side “The doctor said it may not be permanent, she may remember”. Sian sobbed harder “Yeah and she may not, Rosie I can’t do this, I can’t sit with her pretending not to love her, wanting to kiss her, but I can’t, this will kill me, I can’t see her again Rosie, I can’t, I’ve gotta go”. Rosie put her hand out to stop her “Where are you going? When are you coming back?”, Sian shrugged, “I don’t know, I can’t sit there and be her friend, I love her, but she’s not my Sophie, I’ll be in touch, just give her this and tell her, tell her I’ll see her soon”.
Rosie watched Sian walking away knowing that she may never see her again, and then she headed back to Sophie clutching the small box.
Sophie was alert talking when she returned “Where’s Sian?” she asked, Rosie simply handed her the gift, Sophie was puzzled and opened up the box, she saw a white gold locket emblazed with ‘Eternal’ she opened it up and saw a small picture of them on one side hugging and the other side was a picture of them kissing, suddenly Sophie had a flashback.
(Flashback)
“Soph, smile” Rosie beamed, she leant forward and locked lips with Sian, “You love me right?” Sophie asked looking in to the bluest eyes “Course I do” Sian grinned. “I love you too” Sophie said “Forever” Sian grinned “Forever” and kissed her, the camera flash went off, “Rosie” they both shouted turning towards her “Sorry couldn’t resist” she laughed.
(End of flashback followed by clips of their life together in fast motion)
“Oh god, I remember, Sian, get Sian” she cried, Rosie ran out of the hospital as fast as she could in time to see a taxi pull away carrying a blonde haired woman. “Damn it” Rosie cursed dialling her number, suddenly the bin next to her began to play music, Rosie reached in past the rubbish and retrieved her phone, “Oh no, please, Sian!” Rosie started to call praying that she hadn’t gone too far.
