Day 2 Theme: Comfort
Warnings: None
Kanda sat straight up on the gurney that he called a bed, gasping for breath. Sweat dripped as he tried to calm down and remind himself where he was. There was no sky, no flowers, and no mysterious hand in front of his face. He was home-if you could call it that.
It wasn’t working. His breath wouldn’t even out, and the darkness of the room was only helping fuel his paranoia. He felt like he was going to scream…
“Yuu…?”
He had to have jumped three feet in the air at the groggy question.
“Wha’s th’ matter…?” Alma’s words slurred together as he rubbed his tired eyes. Kanda relaxed a little. As much as he hated to admit it, not being alone was pretty nice on nights like this.
“Was in another nightmare?”
He hated how Alma looked at him with pity in his eyes, but there wasn’t much he could do. It was the fourth consecutive night that he woke up far too early because of those stupid nightmares. He couldn’t fall asleep afterwards, so most of the time he was running on only five hours of sleep.
Alma had some time ago decided to move his gurney up against Kanda’s before they went to bed. That way he could he’d wake up when Kanda did and could wrap his arms around his friend before the disorientation wore off.
He scooted backward so that he could rest his chin on Kanda’s shoulder from behind. His arms lay loosely at his side. It wasn’t until the boy curled his arms around himself that he then pulled him into a hug.
“What are you doing, idiot…?” Kanda’s response was as mean as ever, but there was that hint of vulnerability in his voice.
“Today will be a good day. We’ll talk to the others. Maybe someone will wake up. Maybe we’ll even convince the cooks to let us try some of the food the grown-ups eat.”
“How can it be a good day when it’s just like every other miserable day?”
“Don’t say that, Yuu. We can make it a good day.”
“How? We’re still just lab rats.”
Alma tightened his hold on his best friend. “But someday we’ll go outside. It’ll be fun. We can explore the world together, and you can punch Winter in the face for making it so cold.”
Kanda smiled a little bit. He didn’t want to, but it happened anyways. “Bastard deserves it.” Alma just laughed in response.
“Today will be a good day because we’re still here, and as long as I’m here with you and you’re here with me, we’ll never be alone.”
Kanda placed his arms over Alma’s, holding them there for a moment before pushing him away like he always did. They got up and started their usual routine by heading down to see their sleeping friends.
Even though he’d never say it, Kanda took comfort in Alma’s words. As long as they were together, they would be all right. If he was alone, he didn’t really think he could deal with any of it.
