Name: Alma
Fandom: D.Gray-man
Timeline: From somewhere during the six months between chapters 190 and 191.
Age: His actual age is unclear, but he looks to be about nine or ten years old.
Appearance: As far as body type goes, Alma's pretty typical. Average height, a little skinny and maybe just a bit more defined than most kids his age would be, but otherwise unremarkable. He has dark messy hair that's kept cropped short, with slightly longer pieces allowed to grow out a bit by his ears, and his eyes are blue purple that terribly ambiguous shade that even a color cover page can't truly confirm. Topped off with thick eyebrows, long eyelashes, and very expressive features overall, he's really quite adorable. Defining marks include a
tattoo on the left side of his chest and a small scar running over the bridge of his nose.
Abilities: Alma has the same regenerative abilities as Kanda Yu (though they seem to work faster since he's so much younger), from quickly healing cuts and bruises to regenerating limbs, and even coming back from death in minutes. As such, he's got an absurdly high tolerance for pain, but if he's forced to heal from extreme injuries (or death) many times in succession, his body
becomes brittle and less able to heal. On the other hand, in times of high stress his regeneration becomes even faster, as if speeding up to match the desperation of the situation.
At the fastest his healing's been shown, he went from
charcoal to
recognizable in only a few seconds... and somehow being turned into charcoal didn't kill him. His healing will, of course, be hampered within the facility, but I believe that so long as his body isn't in terrible shape, he should be able beat out the doctors before they can pull him.
On top of that, he also possesses strength far beyond that of any child. He's shown to be able to easily knock out several grown men with no trouble, and his fights with Yu usually ended with way more damage to
those who try to intervene than to the boys themselves.
EDIT: Alma and Yu have magical healing blood.
If either boy bleeds into (or otherwise manages to transfer their blood) into the open wound of another person, their healing abilities temporarily transfer to the other person to heal that wound. Completely. Healing only extends to injuries that their blood has touched, so one drop isn't an insta-full-body-cure-all.
Yu has been shown to have this extra (accidental) ability, and as both Alma and Yu were made to be pretty much exactly the same at that age, I'm going to assume Alma has this ability as well. He is, however, completely unaware of it. Yu has only done it once himself, so unless Alma is told about it or circumstances work out just right, he'll never know... which is probably good, because nobody wants Alma running around the facility cutting himself. :| .
Facility Nerfs: Alma has no weapons, all other abilities nerfed to 50%.
Personality:
Even considering the circumstances of his birth/creation and childhood (which involved constant experimentation, pain, and death), Alma is an almost absurdly normal little boy. He's optimistic and generally trusting of authority figures (somehow), and when no one else is around he's likely to simply settle himself down with a book or a quiet game to pass the time. With company he's open and emotional, easily driven to tears before just as quickly jumping back to all-smiles. It's insinuated that he had a much better handle on his emotions before he knew Yu, but while he's not prone to picking fights, he has absolutely no problem with defending himself once one's been started. Most of his first interactions with Yu were of that sort: yelling matches that escalated into brawls before they could be broken up by staff members.
Always curious, he's constantly asking questions and getting excitable about the answers... mostly because there are so many things he simply doesn't know due to his sheltered childhood (if you can even call it a childhood). He's almost completely ignorant of traditional everyday life outside the lab, his small amount of (often inaccurate) knowledge gained only through a few books and interactions with his caretakers. For example, he thinks Winter is a mean old man who makes the outside cold and was completely enthralled by his first taste of a strange new substance known as "mayonnaise". The only things he's truly familiar with are the Asia Sixth Laboratory, the doctors and staff within it, and his fellow "apostles".
Above everything else, Alma is lonely. Spending much of his time outside of synchro testing left to his own devices, he developed a habit of talking to his sleeping "brothers" (the apostles who'd yet to wake from their stasis), visiting them every morning to detail happenings at the Order and new things he'd learned. It's not known how long he spent on his own before Yu woke up, but once he did Alma stuck to him like glue. Often against the other boy's will... and by that, I mean that he stalked him relentlessly until Yu finally broke down and stopped chasing him away. He wants nothing more than to just make friends to talk with and he'll treasure any connection he manages to make, going to great lengths to protect it even at the risk of his own personal safety.
History:
Alma Karma was one of the prized subjects of the Black Order's second exorcist project. With the war against the Millennium Earl raging and more and more precious exorcists constantly getting injured and killed, the Order went looking for a way to preserve those compatible with Innocence (the only weapon truly effective against the Earl's akuma). Desperate for results, scientists of the Order took a less-than-moral path to this end, transplanting the brains of exorcists who were no longer able to serve into new bodies. Even so, most attempts ended in failure when the new subjects began to recall memories of their past lives and went insane.
Best intro you've ever heard for a nine-year-old, right?
Alma, however, knows nothing of his true identity. He realizes he's not really human, but that doesn't seem to trouble him much. He's simply a little boy meant for big things, spending his days learning of Humanity's conflict with the Earl and training to fight him.
Synchronizing with Innocence is an exceedingly difficult thing, impossible for most, and Alma was put through painful experiments over and over in an attempt to try and force a connection. The synchronization testing literally ripped his body apart, but his regenerative abilities brought the boy back from death every time. It's unclear just how long Alma has actually been alive, but he spent most of that time alone, completely deprived of any companions his own age or who shared his situation... until Yu came.
When Yu first awoke, to say that the two of them didn't get along would be something of an understatement. Alma came on very a little strong in his attempts a form a friendship and Yu, far more jaded with their situation than his "brother", quickly rejected him. On several occasions. Usually violently. The lab was often filled with the sounds of them bickering or brawling between synchro testing, much to the staff's despair, but that didn't stop Alma from following after Yu ever chance he got.
Things continued on that way for some time until a particularly difficult testing session brought them face to face and back into conflict again. With both of their bodies too brittle for a proper go, what should've resulted in another unsupervised, explosive fight instead ended with the two boys lying next to each other in puddles of their own blood. As horrifying as that sounds, their own pathetic situation, the one thing the both of them had in common, struck both the boys as funny, and Yu laughed for the very first time since his awakening.
From then on Yu and Alma began to spend more time together, becoming true (if odd) friends over the course of a few months, and that happy time is where I'm pulling him from.
Roleplay Sample - Log:
There was a loud grunt and an odd crunching noise when Alma hit the wall... and another when he slid down to smack into the tile floor... and then an audible pop when his dislocated shoulder fixed itself back into place.
He didn't understand why Yu was always like this. All he'd wanted was to talk with the other boy. It was always so quiet, sitting alone in the lab. He like to sit in the womb room with his sleeping siblings better, but it'd been too cold for that for the last few days. Sometimes Doctor Edgar would sit with him for a little while and play games or bring him books, but he always had so much work to do that he couldn't stay for very long. Alma wasn't really sure what the staff did when they weren't working with him or having those really serious meetings that the branch chief always yelled about...
And there was her angry voice, loud enough to be heard over the chaos of panicked scientists and Yu's cursing. "That is enough, Yu!" Alma sat up halfway in the rubble he'd landed in, wiping his eyes clear of blood from a cut on his brow that had already sealed itself over. The branch chief was a small woman, but no less intimidating for it, looming over a grumbling Yu in a way few others would dare to. Alma had learned a long time ago not to stand that close. Situations like this were what happened when he did.
"Tell that little stalker-bitch to leave me alone!"
Alma scowled and stood from the rubble, angry tears pricking at his eyes. He was supposed to stay calm like Doctor Serlins always told him, but that was so hard with Yu around. They were "brothers". Not like the ones Edgar had told him about, but they were both going to be exorcists! They were supposed to synchronize with the Innocence and help people and stand together, but Yu wouldn't even talk to him! He was always so angry and mean for no reason and-!
Alma lunged forward with a frustrated cry, and there was another loud pop among the yells of the scientists and the bellows of the branch chief as Yu discovered just what a dislocated shoulder felt like.
Roleplay Sample - Journal:
[A small boy with short dark hair, large large bright eyes, and a small scar over running over the bridge of his nose is staring down at the faciliberry, a puzzled expression on his face. He tugs at the collar around his neck a little, but doesn't seem particularly distressed by it.]
Haven't seen this place before...
[He doesn't look to be bothered much by that fact either. It's not the room he remembered going to sleep in, but it's not like that's never happened before. He loses interest in the faciliberry quickly, standing from where he was crouched over it and wandering around the white space he's woken up in. He looks to be about nine or ten years old and is wearing very little clothing, just a pair of black shorts and an odd little bit of cloth on top made mostly of sleeves.]
Heeeey! Yu, where'd you go?
