Oooooh! I've heard that one in real life, which was even more horrid because I had hyperemesis gravidarum, and lost thirty pounds during the course of my pregnancy, and another ten just having the baby. So, having just lost forty pounds, being told that I was risking my marriage by being too fat really, really ticked me off!
Wow. It's been 14 years since I've heard that, and it still has the power to set me off.
The hashtag there is a recent nexus for people speaking truths that people with relative thin privilege have never had any idea were being said, regularly, to real human beings.
In my case, I'm now back in pounds to my pre-preg weight, but definitely a very different shape. Not that I personally care, as it happens; still, a datapoint. :->
John's reaction upon my relaying of the statement was, "Dude, I don't know whether to be more offended on your behalf or MINE, what does he think, I'd leave you because of the changes your body went through BEARING MY CHILD??"
