Some of these books were suggested as good reads by panelists; others by my fellow conventiongoers; and two I got off the SF Outreach Project's free-books shelf and have already read (yum!), so I can recommend them personally. Mostly they are books; I should note a few are visual media of one sort or another. If any of these make you think of ( Read more... )

Thanks! (Here from ML)

I'm starting to look for some stuff to give my dad, and some of these might fit the bill.

Vineart books were an interesting magic system.

The third book didn't upset me, but I felt the author didn't nail the landing of wrapping up the trilogy as well as she could have. Her other books are an ongoing series, so this was her first ENDING.

I rather liked a hero not distracted from his purpose by a love story. After all of the Romantic Suspense of recent publishing SF history, it was a relief.

I am going to look into several of your other recommendations. Thanks for the book post!

I got a good sense of her, conversationally, at her reading and later; I will now be actively seeking out her stuff as likely to be My Kind Of Thing.

Oh, and fangasm moment: Jaqueline Carey came up to me after a walking tour/stroll I participated in (and babbled my head off about Chicago architecture/history the whole time) and said how much she'd enjoyed my contributions. I stammered something back about being glad I could give her even a tiny down-payment in return on all the pleasure her books had given ME over the years! She seemed surprised but pleased; I wonder if she doesn't get many people rave-reviewing at her?
