happy birthday henry lau ♥
(it's still the 11th somewhere in the world)

"Oh my God," Amber hisses, before slapping a hand over her mouth. "Shit."

Krystal peers over her shoulder through their dorm window, before her eyes widen.

"Okay, seriously, your stalker needs to get some taste or something, because honestly?" She points to the window. "Plaid shirt with knee high boots? Is it a girl or boy?"

Amber slaps her hand away. "Can we focus on the important things here? Like the fact that I have a stalker who apparently knows my timetable?"

Krystal laughs, reaching up to mess up Amber's hair.

"You say that like it's new. Come on, time for bed."

There's a disgruntled sound and they turn to see Victoria with her arms crossed, looking at them like she had just caught them stealing lollies.

"It's past 1AM."

She taps her fingers against the crook of her elbow, and Amber looks out once more to see the person shield herself/himself with an umbrella as the rain pours down.

"Sorry unni," Krystal says meekly, trying to hide a smirk as she darts around Victoria to the bathroom.

Victoria gives Amber a look before she, too, darts away and out of the living room.

The boy turns the umbrella once in his hand, sending drops flying before he sees the light wink out and he sighs, bringing out his phone.

"No use, hyung. Where is she tomorrow?"

Sungmin's gentle chuckle filters through. "Only you would be this desperate, Henry. She's at a Star King recording tomorrow early, before we start our schedules, but has the evening free. You can head on over after you finish practise with the rest of the guys."

Henry clutches the phone, before laughing back. "Thanks hyung. Um... can you pick me up?"

There's a loud, staticky sigh. "Be there in ten."

The forecast for the next day is, yet again, storms and downpour. Henry gingerly pulls on the only shoes that will save his socks in ankle deep water and some clothes fans won't, hopefully, notice him in.

"I don't mind spend everydayyyyy, out on the corner in the pouring rainnnnnn," he sings to himself as he pulls on a hat and some glasses. Sungmin waves from the sofa.

"Good luck!"

He thinks he has frostbite. Sungmin rolls his eyes and massages Henry's feet with his warm fingers until he wriggles in discomfort, Sungmin tickling him more than anything else.

"I wish I had a fan like that," Sulli sighs forlornly, looking at Henry decked out in his usual gear, though this time his black umbrella has been traded for a bright pink one with Hello Kitty and Doraemon mating in the most PG-13 way possible.

"Dedication," Krystal says, snorting.

Luna sighs, her hand fluttering above her heart. "That's so sweet and romantic, standing outside in the pouring rain, just waiting for you to go downstairs and confront her, and maybe for her, or him?, to confess, and you to blush and say, oh yes, I like you too..."

Sulli sighs in time with Luna, both of their eyes looking at the boy on the street, shuffling his feet nervously.

"So romantic," Sulli says, and Victoria hits them on the back of the head.

"That's a nice story, but c'mon, bed time. Go, go, go brush your teeth. Shoo!"

She waves them off to the bathroom, even as Sulli reluctantly lets go of the window pane and looks around.

"Where's Amber?"

"Third time's a charm," Henry greets Amber as she emerges from the building, a poncho thrown over her pajamas and rubber boots squelching through the puddles.

Amber freezes in the middle of the road before Henry pulls her off it, road safety ingrained.

"It was you?" Amber asks incredulously, her face forming a grimace and half backing away. "You're my stalker?"

Henry huffs a bit. "I prefer the term fellow label-mate, you know. It isn't easy getting hold of your schedule."

Amber rolls her eyes. "Please, I bet you just bribed Heechul to get it off Sulli or something. And you make a terrible stalker. Also, are you an idol or what? Look at what you're wearing! You'd think you're in the mardi gras or something with those boots and shirt. No wait, a cowboy from Brokeback Mountain. Plaid? Really? Shouldn't you have some taste? Or did you go into Heechul's wardrobe blindfolded with Zhou Mi sparkling next to you, secretly telling you to yes, pick the plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaid."

She draws the last word out in a moan, hand coming up to her neck in some kind of breathless sincerity. Henry finds it cute, like he does with everything else about her. He also has to stifle a laugh at how she's raising an eyebrow at him.

"Um, one, I make a great stalker, even if Sulli looked like she wanted to throw herself at me at one point and Krystal kept on shooting me glares. Two, at least no one recognised me. And three, it's my birthday, you really should be nicer to me."

Amber sighs and crosses her arms, poncho crackling noisily. Henry raises an eyebrow.

"Are you an idol or what? Powerpuff girls pajamas, seriously? And a poncho? And gum boots? What are you, five? You'd think you'd have better taste instead of going into, what, like the kid's section of Target and grabbing the first thing you see."

Amber taps her fingers against her elbow, a mirror of her foster mother. Henry breaks before her.

"C'mon, it's my birthday! You should be nice to me!"

Amber considers for a moment.

It is past midnight, signalling Henry's birthday. But knowing how spoilt he is by his fans and his own band, she thinks that no, she does not need to be nice to him.

"Why're you out here? Three nights. There has to be better things to do, like sleeping."

Henry puffs out his cheeks, spinning the umbrella so some drops hit Amber's forehead. He clears his throat.

"I don't mind spending everyday, out on your corner in the pouring raaaain. Look for the girl with a broken smile, ask her if she wants to say a while. AND SHE WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILL, BE LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED."

Amber jams her hand over Henry's mouth, mindful of Sulli and Luna, and probably at this point, Victoria and Krystal peering out the window. And who knows what other idols on the other floors.

"Do you need to be so loud?" she hisses, though she can't keep the grin from her face. He licks her hand until she lets go.

"No, c'mon. One good deed deserves another."

"Is that our anthem now?"

"If you want it to be. It isn't easy standing in ankle deep cold water for three nights straight, I deserve some sympathy!"

Amber sighs before she leans in quick and kisses him on the mouth. She steps back to see a large, boyish grin blossom on Henry's face before he jerks his head in a shake.

"I'm twenty-one now, Amber, an adult in the US and Canada and everywhere else in the world. I deserve more than that."

Amber pouts a bit before she steps closer, tilts her head and tugs his head closer, hand curled around his neck. Small drops are running down down his shirt and he shivers, but he's distracted when Amber breathes against his lips for a moment, warm air against his face before she leans forward, and oh, yes, there's that kiss.

It's sweet, nothing like the persona Amber shows everyone else, nothing like what everyone sees. Chaste, almost, and she refuses to part her lips even when he runs his tongue against her bottom lip.

Amber, he mouths against her mouth and she gives, her mouth parting slightly, and he takes the opportunity to thrust his tongue in, meeting her's in a rush. They breathe like that, exchanging hot breaths before she sags, clutching at his shoulders, and his arm snakes around her middle.

"Fuck you," she breathes softly, arms against his chest.

"Later," he laughs, the cold rain on her poncho soaking through his clothes. He looks up to the f(x) dorms, seeing two heads peering through the windows.

"Say hi to them for me," he whispers, and she half-heartedly pounds his shoulder.

"Ugh, they know now. Shit."

"Better sooner than later," he says happily and lets go, taking a generous step back.

"Well, that's all I came for!" He waves generously, umbrella still held gaily in his left hand. "Thank you, Amber-sweetie, and I'll see you later."

He turns and walks down the street, disappearing quickly into an alleyway, and she unfreezes enough to give the empty street the finger before stomping back to the dorms.

("I knew it," Sulli says, eyes gleaming as she watches Amber struggle with her poncho. Victoria sighs as she lifts it off.

"You knew?" Amber asks wearily as she sits on the small step to take off her boots.

"Well, we suspected," Krystal says as she walks to the kitchen to pour a glass of milk.

"How was it?" Luna asks eagerly, leaning forward.

"Eh." Amber tugs off her shoes, then sticks her pinky in her ear, twisting. Victoria pats away the hand.

"It was just a kiss, nothing big. Wait, so you knew?" she asks, turning to Krystal and Sulli.

"You weren't very secretive," Victoria says consolingly as she turns the light to the small alcove off. "Come on, bed!"

"Aw, man!" Amber grumbles as she rubs her neck, then runs both hands through her hair. "Ugh, but we were so careful!"

"No, you weren't," Krystal says before chugging down her milk. She helps Amber up, patting her on the back.

"Awwww, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!"

Krystal whacks her gently on the back of the head as they link arms, walking to the bathroom.

"Just tell me how big he is," Krystal stage-whispers and then dodges a pillow from Victoria, laughing.

"JUNG KRYSTAL, GET TO BED THIS INSTANT!"

Krystal blows Amber a kiss, eyes sparkling in mischief. "Goodbye honey, I'll see you in bed~"

"I live with a bunch of creeps and perverts," Amber grumbles as she lets herself into the bathroom, locking the door.

"Worth it?" Sungmin says as he drives through the streets of Seoul, rubbing his eyes.

"Totally," Henry says, eyes bright and lip still red. "Best birthday ever.")
