“Miss Sarah, I’ve never seen it so quiet in here before.”
“Constable! You’ve returned. Miss Catherine sent everyone to the pub for breakfast. Too much mess in here to properly take care of guests.”
“Yes-they’re both alive still, aren’t they?”
“Last I saw, anyway. Doctor’s still going back and forth between their rooms making sure they don’t go home to Jesus. Come to take Caleb Coleson away, I expect?”
“No, actually, I’m here to see Mister Holmes if he’s up for it. Caleb’s still here, is he?”
“Miss Catherine’s got him keeping an eye on whichever person the Doctor’s not watching as he says he knows some animal medicine and a bit of a medicine man is better than none. He’s still trespassing.”
“Of course, he is. And I’ll deal with that at a later point. Just upstairs, are they?”
“Yes, Constable Campbell. Sarah, stop badgering the Constable and clean up. I want to be open for supper.”
“Thank you, Miss Catherine. I’ll just be up-”
“No, Constable, you’ll carry fresh sheets up to Caleb and then you may ask Doctor Shoburn whether or not he thinks Mister Holmes strong enough for visitors.”
“Catherine, I do not-”
“James, you brought these men to my home with the intention of saving their lives. Either agree to my terms for their care or feel free to leave my premises.”
“Catherine, listen to me, please. This is of the upmost importance; Mister Holmes implied that he knew who committed the crime up at the Rainsford residence and while one of them has been dealt with, there are others at large. I just need a brief explanation and names.”
“The sheets, James, and then the Doctor.”
“Fine. Sheets, then Doctor. The woman has been too long on her own… won’t listen a wink merely to stand up for herself. Caleb, I’ve brought you fresh sheets.”
“James! Thank you. How did the inspector take the news?”
“Poorly but he’s sent a pair to fetch Rigsby’s body back to the constabulary. Now, he’s demanding answers and is venting his frustrations upon me for not having them. Is Doctor Shoburn in the other room?”
“Yes, Mister Holmes has developed a fever. Mild but he wants to control it. I doubt he’ll allow you to pester his patient. He’s concerned with having me watch Doctor Watson as it stands.”
“Antagonizing invalids, are you? You’ve certainly thrown Miss Sarah into a mood. She keeps demanding your arrest.”
“I’ve done nothing to cause her harm. She’s just a prickly old bat. And as for the Doctor, he’s not in the right mind and even a saint would set him off. They tasked me with keeping him calm and seated. I believe that it atones for my past sins in this establishment.”
“Slave drivers, these women. Ah, Doctor Shoburn, I must speak with Mister Holmes regarding the case.”
“Yes, yes, he said as much. Go ahead. Even if I forbid it, you’ll not listen and neither will he.”
