Ouch. Poor John. I had a colleague get whumped by a kidney stone once and the poor guy was absolutely dead white -- I mean paperwhite from the pain.

He had every right. It's the worst pain I've ever experienced. And everyone keeps telling me it's just like childbirth. My only response: Awesome, yet another reason NOT to reproduce.

Actually, I've had patients who vaginally delivered breech babies state that the kidney stone was worse...

it depends on how bad the stone is and how bad the childbirth is...quite a bit of variation in both cases, you know...;)

Good story!

Hmm, well, I'm sorry you have difficulty with that bit. Here's my only explanation ( ... )

Actually, given Watson's personality in this series, I think you pegged his reaction spot-on. There's a REASON they say "Doctors make the worst patients": first, we firmly believe that we 'know better' than anyone else; second, we tend to buy into the theory of our own invulnerability. Maybe he'd recognize the risk of pyelonephritis in somebody else, but in himself? Never!

I have a friend that is this self-centered and absorbed, and I have in times past been the enabler of his behavior, and I have done things that have endangered my health on his behalf simply because he does not understand other people's limits, just his own needs.

Even when you are a reasonable person, dealing with a narcissist, you tend to give into their demands because you tell yourself that "they don't understand and can't empathize even if they wanted to, that doesn't make their need any less" so you cave and give in.

Yeah this story brought up a lot of issues for me LOL!

I'm with you 100 percent, Bart, as I had (for nearly six years) a person like that in my life. Every time something turns up where that person is obviously ignoring what you need in favor of what he/she needs, you find a way to justify it.

*is shutting up now in favor of not poking any more issues*

(Teehee, Sherlock tries. Kinda.)

Issues...sister I have more issues than Time/Life!

You got out after six years...congrats...its been eight years for me and still haven't gotten my foot out of the bear trap.

The fact that Sherlock does try upon occasion is what keeps John going...as long as they make an effort no matter how insignificant it looks any effort is monumental when you realize that the person in question is actually acknowledging someone else so therefore they are stepping away from true sociopathy!

The ripping the bomb from his back in showing such irritation was pefectly written to show just how far Sherlock has come...even from the conversation about heroes earlier.

gonna stop typing now LOL!
thanks for writing this!
Bart
