(no subject)
Felt guilty about avoiding the kids on Halloween but had a nice dinner out. And now we have left over candy to enjoy as well. Guilt's not so bad.
Just watched the first three episodes of Firefly, and this very short dribble came of it quickly. Bit boring and it might not be canon since i haven't watched the rest yet...
Goodbyes
“Well, you’re a dummy for going,” he retorted softly. He didn’t look at her but he knew she was smiling happily despite what he had said. She didn’t pause in her packing, clothes and ballet slippers competed for space with her textbooks piled precariously on her bed next to him.
“They’ve got the best minds in the universe there. It’s a government sponsored academy. Our family money didn’t get me in. I tested in,” she said in a patient but still girlish voice. She had explained herself many times. Now she stood and frowned holding up two dresses, trying to decide between them.
The case was nearing full. “Harbor is good, too. Good enough to get me into Medacad Orisis. They’ve got some top mathematicians, theoretical physicists, dancers, … and I could hop a transit to visit on breaks. You’re still a kid. Mom and Dad shouldn’t let you go; it’s too far away.”
“I’m not like other kids, Simon.” She finally turned to face him, her eyes shining even though she shook her head sadly. “I want a challenge, I want to learn everything,” she said dramatically spinning gracefully around the room with her hands raised and giggling. She fell to a heap on the floor by his feet and picked up a glossy brochure sitting by her. “This is the only place I’ll find that. The most exciting program, Federation Academy,” she read in a dreamy voice.
Simon nodded grimly. “Okay, River,” he said with gruff acceptance, “but don’t get in with the wrong crowd. Send me a wave or letters no matter how busy your classes get.”
“I will,” she said with a smile. She stood up and pulled him up into a hug. “Be happy for me.”
He held her for a moment longer than necessary before he closed her traveling case, and pushed a bell for a family porter to come take it.
