Yeah, I like the Spiderwick series too. I may actually get to read them this summer, now that they've gotten unpopular enough to actually be in the library occasionally.
I too was disappointed by Tithe-- I felt that Holly had just chewed up and spit out a random fairy tale in the middle of a random and otherwise totally disconnected YA book, rather than properly digesting the stories first.
My library has a summer reading club, one for kids and one for adults, where you get prizes for reading a certain number of books, and I'm debating whether or not to add the Spiderwick book to the list. It sorta feels like cheating because it's so short. :P But I do want to read the rest of them, and they're short enough that I don't feel like it's too much of an investment.
Those Japanese books you have sound exciting. Let me know if you have any recommendations (that are possible to buy in the US). I read Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (who I guess is a pretty popular author?) and liked it alright. I've been meaning to read more translated Japanese books, and now I finally have time.
