WTF? Anyone know how to get rid of them? It's very annoying to accidentally run over something with my mouse and have an unwanted window pop up.

Account -> Viewing Options. Then uncheck the "Graphic previews" box. I'm guessing you probably want to get rid of the "Contextual Hover Menu" too (that thing that pops up when you're mousing over someone's userpic)...
