It was raining. It always rained on Memorial Day, as if the weather was mourning with the survivors. People had wanted to call this day the ‘Harry Potter Day’, to celebrate his victory, but he’d refused the idea. Today was about the people who died fighting for the good side.

A single white rose was placed by a headstone, which read:

Here lies Severus Snape
A Slytherin
A Spy
A Hero.

The girl who’d placed the flower kneeled by the grave, her blue tights getting soggy from the wet grass and the rest of her clothes slowly growing heavier on her as the rain poured down. But she barely noticed; her concentration fully on the words engraved in the black stone. She’d read them so many times that they were imprinted in her mind, yet when she sat before his grave, she couldn’t take her eyes away from them.

“Good morning, Professor,” Luna said, her voice quiet but cheerful. This was the fifth year since his death, and she’d sat before his grave every time Memorial Day rolled by. Snape was buried in the grounds at Hogwarts. Some people had been sceptical of the idea, but Harry had insisted; Hogwarts was Snape’s home, and he deserved to be here as much as Dumbledore did. Dumbledore’s tomb was a five minute walk away from Snape’s. “We’re having terrible weather again.” Luna told Snape, her eyes now torn from his headstone to the sky, blinking as rain drops hit her face.

The sun was slowly rising, it was early morning and she doubted anyone but the House Elves in Hogwarts were awake. She didn’t visit his grave when others were around. It was nice and peaceful at this moment, to watch the day form whilst sitting with her old Professor. She and others who’d fought were visiting Hogwarts to talk to the students about the war, Voldemort and their many losses, in a big Assembly in the Great Hall after lunch, as it was half a decade since it happened.

“Harry’s got this big speech planned about you, you know,” Luna said conversationally, thinking back to the parchment he’d shown her with his notes. “It’s very flattering. Surprising really, he’s always hated you.” She smiled gently at this. There was no denying that Snape had been a bastard to Harry and, well, everyone else. The fact that Severus was a hero had wiped some people’s memories of this, but Luna had always found Snape’s ways charming. She didn’t want to forget his distaste for Gryffindor, or how he mocked the Hufflepuff’s who didn’t do so well in Potions.

Silence followed this, as she stared back to the light rising from behind the lake. As the day grew brighter, the rain let off. By the time the sun was fully up, all was left was a few drips of water. Luna, who’d exhausted her mind of silly memories of the old Potions master, slowly got up off the ground.
“I’ll see you later,” she told the grave, and she blew a little kiss towards it before turning and walking towards the castle, waving her wand to make her clothes dry again.
