I've also met Diana Gabaldon, who waxed poetic on the virtues of a certain Scottish companion on Doctor Who, and how that lead her to select 18thC Scotland as the backdrop for her books.
And the very subtle use of the name "Jamie Fraser" for her main character. *grins* I have to read Outlander one day.

You know, I liked it, but I wasn't crazy about it like so many of her fans. I keep trying to read book two, and keep putting it back down. And I felt badly for her, a lot of the questions she got from people in the audience were "You're not going to kill off Jamie, are you?". As if she would tell you that if she were... o_O

Yes, I was getting the same impression, except that the median age of the people (mainly women, but not exclusively) was about 45... grannies and housewives indeed...
