as you may know, i was around for the earlier parts of his career :). as a child i don't remember recognizing that he was remarkable- the jackson 5 were ubiquitous, but for little kids who didn't understand r&b or motown as categories they were about the entertainment, the matching sparkly costumes and dance moves, like the osmond brothers and the partridge family. i always loved "i want you back" but i was probably 13 or so before i started to realize just what an extraordinary record it is on every level. that was around the time the jacksons and then michael solo were returning to the top of the charts, and they were part of the soundtrack of the roller-rink years, and also part of what everybody, especially the guys, turned against in the "disco sucks" backlash ( ... )
