In summary: I think this arc they are going from strangers merely living in the same space to relating to each other as mutual friends.
I think we have quite a way to go before Kat openly accepts Music Man as a Father figure.

And speaking with a certain amount of experience on the matter it really is disorienting, confusing and a little unnerving when someone is going out of their way to be nice. That and you simply don't know how to act or how to feel because it is so foreign and unusual for people to take the time to get to know you. I'm not sure that voice of suspicion ever goes away when you have been living under a cloud of fear and mistrust for so long.
