Dean hated to see that look in Sammy's eyes. What would cheer the kid up? "Hey, I know it sucks that we're moving again right before Christmas, but you know Santa can find us no matter what, right?"

Sammy looked up at him. "Really?"

Dean hated to see him so skeptical. Six-year-olds shouldn't look like that. "Shyeah. The dude flies around the world in a night. He's got three days to update our address on his list. He'll do it." He was just glad he'd already bought and wrapped Sammy's Santa present. It was safely hidden in his duffel bag.

Sammy searched Dean's face and then nodded slowly. "Ok, if you say so," he finally said.

***

Dean barely woke up when Sammy left the bed. Sammy'd been having some bed-wetting problems and Dad had drilled into Sammy's head to get up and go to the toilet when he felt the urge.

But Dean's eyes snapped open when he realized that Sammy hadn't come back. He wondered how long it had been, but Sammy's side of the bed had cooled off enough to let him know it had been a while. He slid out, careful not to wake Dad as he walked across the room.

There was a light in the bathroom, but Dean couldn't hear anything. He remembered the time Sammy had fallen asleep in the bathtub, so he opened the door.

Sammy looked up at him with big, betrayed eyes. "Go away!" he whispered.

Dean looked at the scene in front of him. Newspaper was everywhere. There was one package clumsily wrapped in newspaper with TO DEAN FRM SANTA written in big, blocky letters. Sammy was holding the duct tape and seemed to be just finishing another present.

Dean closed the door and squatted next to his brother. "What are you doing, dude?"

Sammy shook his head. "Nothing."

Dean looked around again. "Come on, dude."

Sammy's eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry," he sobbed.

Dean pulled his brother over. "Hey, hey, hey. What's wrong?"

"There's no such thing as Santa," Sammy barely whispered.

"What?" Dean pulled back and looked at Sammy.

Sammy sniffed. "There's no such thing as Santa," he repeated. "Last year, Daddy put our presents under the tree, even the ones from Santa. I saw it. And I looked in Daddy's bag but there aren't any presents this year. I guess we were naughty."

"Sammy..."

"But you're the best big brother." Sammy looked at the newspaper sadly. "So I wanted to give you Santa presents this year." He started to cry again. "But I ruined Santa for you."

Dean just stared. He had no idea what to do. How was he supposed to fix this? "You didn't ruin anything, come on."

Sammy sniffed. "I didn't?"

"No, no, come on. I mean..."

Sammy was looking at him with hopeful eyes.

"Well...I mean...Santa. Come on," he floundered.

Sammy frowned in concentration.

Dean cast about for anything. "Okay, so this stranger just comes and goes and the salt doesn't stop him? That's pretty scary, dude." Dean was improvising for all he was worth. "I was a little worried, actually."

"But Santa's a good guy," Sam pointed out.

"Oh, sure. Yeah. But, you know, what if he made a mistake and then something bad could get in, too? What if?"

Sammy nodded. "Yeah."

"And, uh, so this old guy comes in and leaves me a present, and he doesn't even know what I like, really. How could he?"

"He sees you when you're sleeping and he knows when you're awake," Sammy recited.

Whose side are you on? Dean wondered. "Yeah, that's true," he answered through clenched teeth, "but I don't think he would really know what I would want. And I don't know him. So why do I even want a present from him? A present from you or Dad, that's a good present."

"Really?" Sammy finally smiled.

Dean sighed inwardly with relief. "Yeah, really."

"Okay." Sammy looked at the present he'd already wrapped. He picked it up and crossed off "SANTA" and wrote "SAMMY," then gave Dean a stern look. "But you can't have this until tomorrow."

"Got it."

"Okay, I have to wrap the other presents now. You can't look."

"Fair enough."

It took Sammy ages, but he finally finished. They put the newspaper-covered presents at the foot of the bed and Dean tucked Sammy in before climbing in on the other side.

"Dean?" Sammy whispered.

"Yeah?"

"I don't think the Tooth Fairy is real, either."

"Go to sleep, Sammy."

" 'k."
