The Good
“The Ministry,” Umbridge began with her back to them, staring out the window, “is under attack. Attack from deranged and violent individuals.”

Pansy giggled softly. Millicent turned and saw that Malfoy was somehow manipulating the kittens on the plates into suggestive postures. Umbridge hadn’t noticed.

“You may wonder how you, in your innocence and inexperience, can help. But loyalty will always be noticed and rewarded.”

She turned round suddenly.

“I want to ask all of you--the good students--to be the Ministry’s eyes and ears in Hogwarts. Cooperate and receive power even above prefects.”

Millicent allowed herself to smile.

The Bad
Everyone was buzzing about Harry Potter as they filed out of the Great Hall. Everyone except two: Draco Malfoy had his jaw locked with a murderous expression that should’ve warned Goyle and Crabbe to stop blathering, and Pansy Parkinson was scolding Millicent Bulstrode.

“Millieeeeeeeee,” she whined, pitching it on two levels. “That was so embarrassing!”

Millie wanted to reply that no one would remember what she had done after Potter’s performance, but did not quite have the courage.

“We’re witches, not wrestlers!” Pansy moaned. “Honestly, another maneuver like that… even I can’t defend you any more… bad as a Squib...”

the Ugly
“I guess I just never pictured you getting married so… quietly.”

Pansy flipped up her veil and scrutinized her face in the mirror, which encouragingly said “Pink is your color, dearie.”

Satisfied, she let it fall down again and turned to smile at Millie through the lace. “It’s more romantic if you call it an elopement. Better not to send invitations than have them refused. We’re not exactly popular anymore, you know.”

“When were we popular?”

Pansy reached out a white glove and squeezed Millie’s hand. She felt suddenly overwhelmed by her friend’s pristine, perfumed, pink-and-white perfection. In appearance, anyway.
