I had the same problem with the Glasswright books. The whole glasswright business is interesting, but the rest of it seems to be very much another version of something else I'd read before.
I've had the same issue with the series by Maria Snyder, Poison Study & Magic Study. It contains SOME very unusual and interesting points, and a whole lot of characters and plots rehashed a dozen times over in other books.
I figured out what really was bothering me yesterday. The Rani that we met at the beginning of the book was the same Rani that was at the end of the second book. No development, no growth, despite the destruction of everything in her life.
