If you know much about bikes, please read on...I've found a bike in Oregon I'm looking to buy, however, it's a salvage (reconstructed) title. I'm told it's because the bike was dropped (cosmetic + foot peg damage) and the insurance company fixed it and titled it so. I'm new to sport bikes, and I need to know it hasn't been wrecked ( Read more... )

It sounds like someone got it and then decided it was a bad idea the first time they dumped it. That can be a scary experience. That probably means its in great shape. Plus its cold up there. Its 100 times colder on a bike. Thats how a lot of bikers get cheap Harleys, they buy them from Northerners that get them in the summer and then realize they can't ride them half the year.

Do you currently ride? If not, find a biker friend to test drive it and ask them specifically to pay attention to any issues it may have. Also, make sure all the lights are there and are working, especially the blinkers. Plus, how heavy is it? If you dump it, which is likely, you need to be able to pick it back up and ride home. I hope that all helps and I hope you enjoy riding! :D

There's no way to find out what really happened to the bike. And there's no way to find out if the bike was really properly fixed. A salvage title just means the work to fix it cost more than the bike was worth.

The seller says the bike was dropped and incurred enough damage to warrant a salvage title? Was it "dropped" at 70mph???

The seller can tell you whatever story they want, because there's no way to find out what really happened. Do you trust the seller to tell you the truth? Do you trust the insurance company to have repaired it as good as new?

Good luck in your bike search. My advice: shell out for a good used bike. Of course a salvage bike is cheap - no one wants the risk.
