I asked a young colleague (21, half my age exactly. Ugh) the meaning of one of his tattoos (CHF). He blushed and did not answer.
...
I wonder if it is bad manners to ask about some body's tattoos.

I feel very much out of the loop.

People ask me about mine all the time. I don't mind at all, if it's done respectfully. It's not realistic to have a very visible tattoo (mine is large, and on my forearm, so there's no hiding it), and not expect some people to be curious, especially if it's an unusual design.

Obviously I can't speak for everybody who's got ink, but that's how I feel. I might choose to explain only a little bit of the real reason I got the ink, and keep the rest private, but so far I've never had reason to be offended simply by someone's natural curiosity. :)

Thanks for reassuring me.
What's your tattoo about then? :)

Sorry about being so late, but my internet connection has been very dodgy these past days.

Hmm, well, it's really tough to describe, so I'll just say it's pre-Christian Irish, very swirly.

What it's about... hard to say, which is kind of why I had my feelings made into art. Mostly I guess it's about growing up on the ocean, and a long family history of restless Celtic blood. :)
