when my kids first got on pcs, the little paperclip guy freaked the hell out of them;) i think i've sheltered them from the blue screen to date, but i will have to stop being an overprotective parent here soon since one of their pcs is about 5 years old - and very creaky!
My Windows crashed about 6 times this year. I installed Ubuntu on one of the hard drives to bypass the MBR, but this time I had to re-format the hd and re-install xp. I can't get it to connect to the Internet to download updates.
Ubuntu is good, but a little slow, and it can't use some of the plug-ins, so no shockwave and I can't open some of the media files I download.
Doesn't crash though so can't complain too much. I was able to pull files from the Windows before I wiped it. Ubuntu is fairly easy to use and you can download it onto a cd and install it from that. Thank goodness. free free free!
computers are SUCH pains..... i usually reinstall a few times and bequeath my pc to my sons and get a new one. this year we're buying our neighbor's used one and giving the oldest one we have to my MiL. I'm sure to here it will seem zippy (she can't really use a mouse very well)

I love the sudden appearance of "This Blah-Blah has performed an illegal function and must terminate now" when you have done nothing at all.
and of course .. The Blue Screen of Death!
