hobbit on parade

Without going back and actually looking, it seems so far like I've spent this journal year either griping or talking about my kid. Sorry folks, at least half of the trend continues.

The thing is, two is such an explosive age... and in this case I mean that in the best way possible. I know there are several ways in which my little hobbit can drive me absolutely crazy. She often whines, for one thing, when there's truly nothing to whine about. She does it when she wants something, and honestly, most of the time, if she'd just ASK me the same thing I'd give it to her without being annoyed. Like juice, for instance. She will request juice in this pathetic tone of voice, and then we have to stop and try to get her to "ask Mommy nicely," or somesuch thing, and sometimes it works and sometimes it just makes things worse, but I'm *really* trying to address the whining thing and get her to knock it off. Not cool.

For the most part, though, I'm REALLY enjoying her. She cracks me up! For instance, she's started talking to the television. Not long ago, watching Toy Story II (again), we come to the part of the movie where Al loses Woody's arm:

Al: "Oh, no! Where's his arm? Where's his ARM?"
Sarah: "Right THERE!"

Of course, she's "oh no"-ing, herself alot these days. How I wish I could set down the inflection in print! The closest comparison I can make is when I hear people say "Oh, MAN!" The kind that ends with that slight upswing to the voice. Sarah does that with "Oh, NO!"

When it's not "oh, NO!" it's often "I DID it!" With the arms thrown up and everything. :) Funny kid. In fact, she is even starting to truly demonstrate her own sense of humor. A couple weeks back we brought my old Charlie Horse out of the garage. You know the one... that plastic horse on a frame, suspended by springs. Hell, it's probably outlawed as a lethal item, now, because you can really pinch your fingers in the springs and fall off and all kinds of horrible things. But I'm here to tell you, that horse is a FUN TOY!! So my mom saved him, and sure enough we've brought him back into service. So Sarah needed a hat to go with the horse, and Ben got her one. The day or so after, she was putting it on Maddie and laughing up a storm. :) Much like she did a couple days ago, when she made her own joke:

For some reason, Sarah is fascinated with diaper wipes. When I change her, she always has to have one, and here lately she's started putting them in her mouth. No idea what that's about. But anyway, she did that a few days ago:

Me: "EWWWW! Sarah, *don't eat the wipes!*"
Sarah: "Sarah eat it!"
Me: "Nooooo! Sarah NO eat it!"
Sarah: considers a moment, then says: "ELMO eat it!" And starts laughing maniacally.

She's not ready for the tour circuit just yet, but you know... it was kinda funny. :)

Funnier, still, to me at least, is that here at Easter time, I have learned that my child actually HATES chocolate Easter eggs. She had her little egg hunt last Friday at school, right? So yesterday, as I'm trying to paint the hallway, she's all in her basket getting the candy out of it. She'd remove a chocolate egg or bunny or whatever from the plastic egg. Unwrap it. Taste it. And then say..."EWWWWW!" And go throw it in the trash. I didn't stop her, that's for sure. :)

We don't really celebrate Easter too much in this house, but we will probably go to my sister's for lunch or dinner. In the meantime, I have bought Sarah a bona fide Easter dress for her spring pictures. Are you sitting down? It's PINK TULLE. Those of you who have known me for a good while can pick yourselves up off the floor now. It really is perfect, though... and Sarah LOVES it! I tried it on her because I wasn't quite sure whether she'd fit in a 2T. Then I had to chase her to get it off of her. She's such a girly-girl! ;)

And about to be more so, I guess... here in a little bit, we're off to sign the wee one up for gymnastics. We gave it a look last summer and opted for Gymboree... but methinks it's time to revamp. Last weekend we were out buying paint at the hardware store, and they have these carts that are used to carry pegboard and plywood and lumber and stuff. There's a short bar on either side of the cart, and two taller bars in the middle. Sarah had SO much fun using that cart as a set of uneven bars!! Besides, the gymnastics schedule works better for us.... and it will probably burn off more of that super-atomic toddler energy..... ;)
